According to the Musikalisches Conversations-Lexikon. An encyclopaedia of the entire musical sciences. For the educated of all classes", the piano was Beethoven's favourite instrument: "It is suitable for bringing out the individual and yet profound expression. ... The outward result is a hitherto unimagined development of the technique of piano playing in all directions, which went hand in hand with the increased importance of the composers. Whereas the lyrical, songful manner had previously been dominant on the piano, Beethoven first localised the dramatic style to it, which brought with it a richness of sound, playing and figures that had not yet existed. The resulting increase in demands on the power and expressiveness of both the instrument and the player had to give rise to a completely new musical epoch."

Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 21 in C Major, Op. 53, known as the Waldstein, is one of the three most important sonatas of his middle period (the other two being the Appassionata, Op. 57, and Les Adieux, Op. 81a). Completed in the summer of 1804 and dwarfing Beethoven's previous piano sonatas in scope, the Waldstein is a key early work of Beethoven's 'heroic' decade (1803-1812) and set a standard for piano composition in the grand manner.

The sonata's name derives from Beethoven's dedication to his close friend and patron, Count Ferdinand Ernst Gabriel von Waldstein, a member of the Bohemian noble Waldstein (Valdštejn) family. It is the only work Beethoven dedicated to him[1] and is also known as L'Aurora (The Dawn) in Italian, because of the sonority of the opening chords of the third movement, which are said to evoke the image of daybreak.

It is considered one of Beethoven's greatest and most technically demanding piano sonatas. The first part of the rondo requires simultaneous pedal trills, high melody and rapid left-hand runs, and the coda features glissando octaves written in dialogue between the hands.

The video was filmed by Christian Schlegel at the lake of Thun and edited by Wenjing Ma.
