At the premiere of the Ninth Symphony, the composer's hearing had already deteriorated to such an extent that he could no longer conduct himself.

At the end of the performance, the audience broke into rapturous applause. Karoline Unger had been present at the premiere as an alto. She remembered it as follows:

"The master (Beethoven) stood in the midst of this musical confluence (near the conductor), but heard nothing of it, nor did he perceive the applause of the audience at the end of his great work, but continued to stand with his back to the audience, beating time, until I called upon him to turn towards the people, who were still clapping and giving way to the greatest expressions of joy. His turning around and the sudden conviction that he hadn't done it before because he couldn't hear what was going on had the effect of an electric shock on everyone present, and a volcanic explosion of sympathy and admiration followed, repeated over and over and seemingly without end."
