Georg Phillip Telemann's father was a preacher and attached great importance to a scientific education, so Telemann attended several grammar schools and received a comprehensive and universal education. Just how important music was to Georg Telemann is shown by the fact that he composed his first opera at the age of twelve, in addition to all his other academic studies. As his studies progressed, he learnt to play the flute, violin and piano, all without taking lessons. With the exception of the piano, where he received 14 days of instruction. Whilst still a student, he conducted the music in the Gotthardine Church in Hildesheim and was then appointed music director and organist in the new church, where he was still studying. And this was just the beginning of his musical career.
