Dwayne Johnson is leading an expedition to the heart of the Amazon as Dr. Marcus Stone, a herpetologist researching what appears to be genetic mutation in anacondas that has resulted in them growing to impossible sizes because they were fed the toxic chemical waste from companies dumping pharmaceutical chemicals in small river tributaries. Johnson gives Dr. Stone the authority, respect and fear of nature’s most deadly animals but soon realizes too late that these are no ordinary snakes – they’re evolved apex predators that exhibit pack intelligence that should not be present in reptile brain functions. Scarlett Johansson is Dr. Elena Cross – a biologist whose research on rapid evolution is being used by companies that want to harvest the cause of these mutations, therefore making her complicit in the disasters that she is desperately trying to stop. Paul Rudd provides some much needed comedic relief as Jack Porter, the documentary filmmaker tagging along on the expedition who thought he was filming just another documentary on wildlife but then finds himself part of the prey for creatures that are hunting in a coordinated attack with terrifying precision.
As the team ventures further into the rain forest, they find themselves in areas of the jungle where all of the natural rules do not apply – where every shadow can hide something large enough to swallow a human being whole without any problem at all.
