"Lamento della ninfa" (Lament of the Nypmh) is one of the most famous madrigals by the italian composer Claudio Monteverdi (1614-1638). It is part of the book of eight madrigals, a compilation of 1638 dedicated to Emperor Fernando III. It is written for soprano, two tenors, bass and basso continuo, and the text is based on a canzonetta by Ottavio Rinuccini. It marks the composer’s transition from polyphony to monody in the first half of the 17th century.

Monteverdi's madrigal Lamento della Ninfa is, as the title suggests, first and foremost a lament. A lament is "a passionate expression of grief or sorrow", usually used in mourning. For example, the music suddenly modulates into a minor mode, and when the word "grief" or in Italian "scorgeasi" is said, the music really condenses into what sounds like a very diminished chord. This is a true Monteverdi/Baroque form. Matching the music to what is going on in the text was what Monteverdi was known for. The painting of the text in this madrigal really helps the listener to feel the emotion of the lament - the sense of loss and sorrow.
