In 1900, Puccini wrote Tosca. It is arguably Puccini's first foray into Verismo, which aims to depict many facets of real life, including violence, in a realistic manner. Puccini had been considering an opera on the subject since seeing Victorien Sardou's play Tosca in 1889, when he wrote to his publisher, Giulio Ricordi, asking for Sardou's permission to turn the work into an opera: "I see in this Tosca the opera I need, without exaggerated proportions, without elaborate spectacle, nor will it require the usual excessive amount of music."

The use of musical signatures for specific characters and emotions in the music of Tosca has been compared to Wagnerian leitmotifs, and some contemporaries saw Puccini as adopting a new style of music under the influence of Richard Wagner. Others, however, had a different view of the work. A reviewer of the Turin premiere on 20 February 1900 rejected the claim that Tosca showed Wagnerian influences, writing: "I don't think you could find a more Puccinian score than this."
