The Grande polonaise brillante is a work for piano and orchestra. However, the piano part is often played alone. The Andante spianato for solo piano (spianato means 'even' or 'smooth') was written as an introduction to the Polonaise. This was the only time Chopin used the term spianato to describe a work.
