【Classical music and nature Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Sonata no. 8 'Pathetique', Op. 13 - I. Grave - Allegro di molto e con brio. This beautiful piece was played by Paul Pitman. It has Creative Commons license and is provided through www.musopen.org.
This passage, sourced from the "Musikalisches Conversations-Lexikon" of 1870, provides a glimpse into Beethoven's physicality, creative process and his love for nature.
"Beethoven was of a small rather than medium, but stocky and strong nature, stocky and of strong bone structure; the face, full, round and healthily coloured, was framed by thick, dark but almost always tangled and disordered hair and showed restless, luminous eyes that were almost piercing when the gaze was fixed, as well as an energetically closed mouth. The latter indicated strength of action and will. While the eyes spoke of good-naturedness and shyness or even absence in the mind. The taut conduct of the body gave way to a suspiciously listening posture as the deafness increased, but the movements were and remained hasty and unregulated. But under his neglected, peculiar, often rough and repulsive shell, he concealed a noble, pure and sensitive heart, deeply permeated by nature and human love. His most sublime works are a celebration of these feelings. He loved and cultivated solitary walks far out into the countryside and took them almost daily, regardless of the weather. In order to think, dream and create undisturbed and unchallenged by any unpleasant coincidences. ... For the inconveniences which domestic life offered him (he was not married and so his household was under the arbitrary control of a servant), he rewarded himself in his favourite workshop, in the great wide nature, where some of his major works were not only written, but also polished".
