Yalda night is one of the ancient festivals of Iranians, which was celebrated for more than 7000 years (yes, 7 thousand years!) in Iran and its surrounding countries that were once part of the Iranian Empire.
This festival added to the Persian calendar by King Darius I since 500 BC.
Iranians used to celebrate the last night of autumn and the longest night of the year because it heralded the start of longer days and the birth of the sun.
We spend this night with family and elders and celebrate with special foods.
Watermelon, pomegranate, red apple, beetroot, nuts, dried fruits and all kinds of sweets are the main parts of Yalda night table.
The reason for choosing these red foods is rooted in the ancient belief that red was considered a symbol of the sun, and the sun was sacred to everyone.
One of the most important traditions of us Iranians on this night is reading the poems of Hafez or reciting the Shahnameh
These two books are among the most prominent Iranian poetry books and are a symbol of the rich and ancient Persian culture and literature
Thousands of pages of books can be written for Yalda night, its cultural roots, its symbols, its customs, its ideas and beliefs, because this ancient tradition of Iranians is still standing for 7 thousand years and with all the wars and various religions that have emerged in Iran. Only the details of this night have changed, but still all Iranians remain loyal to this ancient tradition.
