Goldeneye | T-55 tank at St. Petersburg

In addition to the supercars that Bond drove in the 007 movies, the T-55 tank used by Brosnan in GoldenEye made a deep impression on 007 fans. The tank chase is one of the thrilling scenes in James Bond's "GoldenEye" directed by Ian Sharp. Most scenes were filmed at famous tourist attractions in St. Petersburg; some scenes were made on set.
Why is Bond showing up in St. Petersburg in GoldenEye?
Bond (Pierce Brosnan) arrives in St. Petersburg because it is the headquarters of Janus. This terrorist organization stole a stealth helicopter and blew up a Soviet base in Siberia.
This scene in GoldenEye originates from General Ourumov (Gottfried John) arresting Bond's girlfriend Natalya Simonova (Izabella Scorupco). As the tank chase unfolds, Bond destroys downtown St. Petersburg.
The production of GoldenEye bought three Russian tanks - two T-54 and one T-55. The cost of each is between 9,000 and 11,000 pounds, and for stunt purposes. The crew staged stunts and explosions in downtown St. Petersburg with utmost care because the city authorities were concerned about damage to their streets and historic buildings.
Since the spectacular action was often not repeatable, each shot was captured with at least four cameras (sometimes six). In the stunt for Brosnan in GoldenEye, Gary Powell drove the tank to 35 mph, ensuring the thrill of the street chase scenes.
The T-55 tank, which appeared in the 1995 James Bond film GoldenEye, was the main battle tank for armored units of the Soviet Army during the Cold War. The T-54/55 series participated in many armed conflicts worldwide at the end of the 20th century, with an extensive production volume ranging from 86,000 to 100,000 units.
