How to make Bobbin Lace
Lace is a delicate fabric made of yarn or thread with an open lattice pattern, machine-made or hand-made. Mainly lace is divided into two main types, needle lace and bobbin lace, although there are other types of lace, such as knitted or crocheted lace.
The difference between a needle lace and a bobbin lace is the method and amount of needle used. In needle lace, the use of just one thread is required to create stitches, which gradually build up a garment. On the other hand, in bobbin lace, several threads are attached to small bobbin units, which create patterns.
This video will introduce a brief history of bobbin lace and the tools and materials used to make it.
There are two types of bobbin lace: continuous and non-continuous forms. The former involves working the ground and motif in one go, while the latter involves making individual motifs and then attaching them to small bars or mesh ground.
In the past, flax, silk, gold, or silver threads were used to make lace. Now lace is usually made of cotton yarn or of synthetic fibers.
