Dirt Farmer Jay will show you how to create an inexpensive, instant, compact garden in just minutes! No special tools required!
Hey, Dirt Farmer Jay here from DirtFarmerJay.com.
Hey, urban gardeners, if you're looking for a way to instantly create a growing space
without a lot of money and improve next year's gardening area, here's my secret weapon.
Look right over here.
You've seen these from all the different home centers here where you can just buy potting
mix that's in a poly bag.
And they come in different sizes, different weights, they're all pre-moistened.
Here I am in October in the Mountain West of the United States.
So I'm just going to show you something that you can use for the next year.
I won't be actually planting something, but I wanted to get this tip out to you so that
you can make plans for it next year.
You can see this is an area in the lawn here that is not real productive, and this would
be a great candidate if I wanted to, to create some instant gardening beds.
The great thing about this technique I'm going to show you is that not only can you use it
to next year grow a nice little crop in here, whether it's a kitchen garden, got some greens,
some scallions, perhaps a little bit of lettuce, maybe even some short carrots or radishes,
those sort of things.
But when you're done at the end of the season, you simply dump it out and improve the soil
right here.
So here's how I go about doing this.
The first thing I'm going to do is I'm just going to take this bag and flip it over.
And like I said, they come in different sizes, so whatever you'd like.
And there's different things you've got to do.
First of all, you'll need to perforate the back of the bag to assure that water moves
through the soil mix and out of the bag.
If you don't, you'll get putrefaction because you're setting up an anaerobic area inside
the bag and the plant cannot grow in that.
So you've got to let moisture migrate out.
And the way to do that, there's some different ways you can perforate it.
You can go all the way from misusing your kitchen utensils or your barbecue utensils.
You could take that and stab your bag like this.
You could use an ice pick if you want to do lots of different holes.
And I'm just simply poking holes all over here.
Don't tell Dirt Farmer Mac, yeah.
Ice pick.
Okay, and then maybe here's a little cultivating type of a deal here as you can see.
It's going to just punch holes right in like this.
Or if you like to stand up, you can use something like this.
Now that I've got it to that level, I would do that on both these bags.
And I'm simply going to take it, sort around and get it into position.
And then the next thing I'm going to do here, simply take a regular utility knife with a
sharp razor in it.
I'm going to cut out a section, alright.
And I could have made that in a little bit in deeper if I wanted to, but now you can
see that I've got this right here that is ready to be planted.
Now I can either plant it by doing this type of thing, or if I was going to put in seeds,
I can certainly create a seed trench, put them right in here, and I can lightly water
and fertilize right on top of this and the water will migrate through and you've got
yourself an innocent garden.
If you found this to be helpful, pass it on to a friend or a neighbor.
