Most people assume Kingsford Charcoal was founded by a barbecue enthusiast named Kingsford. Its real history begins with Henry Ford, automobile production, and enormous piles of leftover wood.

Early Ford automobiles contained substantial amounts of hardwood in their bodies, frames, wheels, and interior components. To secure a dependable supply, Ford Motor Company purchased more than 313,000 acres of timberland in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Edward G. Kingsford, a Ford dealer and relative by marriage, helped arrange the purchases and became a leader of Ford’s regional lumber operations.

The mills produced automotive parts, but they also created heaps of sawdust, chips, slabs, and short wood scraps. Ford considered wasted material to be wasted money. Some scraps fueled factory steam production, while others were heated with limited oxygen, carbonized, and compressed with starch into charcoal briquettes.

Charcoal is made by heating wood without allowing enough oxygen for normal combustion. This process, called pyrolysis, removes much of the wood’s moisture and volatile material, leaving a carbon-rich fuel. Compared with ordinary firewood, charcoal is compact, relatively predictable, and can produce steady heat with less smoke and fewer sparks.

Henry Ford did not originate the basic charcoal-briquette idea. Ellsworth B.A. Zwoyer patented an American briquette-manufacturing process in 1897, well before Ford entered the business. Ford’s great contribution was turning wood waste into briquettes on an industrial scale and using the company’s manufacturing and dealership networks to sell them.

Ford also consulted his friend Thomas Edison while developing the charcoal operation. Another Ford friendship connected him with agricultural scientist George Washington Carver. Ford and Carver shared an interest in conservation and in finding industrial uses for crops and materials that might otherwise be overlooked. Ford later experimented extensively with soy-based plastics, paints, and other products.

The charcoal was originally sold as Ford Charcoal through Ford automobile dealerships. Ford also marketed portable grills and picnic kits, neatly connecting automobile travel with outdoor cooking. The Kingsford name came later and honored the Michigan community named for Edward Kingsford.

Charcoal production was only one part of Ford’s waste-recovery campaign. His operations distilled scrap wood into useful chemicals, captured combustible gases for heat and power, and turned blast-furnace slag into Portland cement. To Ford, a byproduct was often simply a product waiting for a market.

That central idea survives in the modern Kingsford business. The company says its charcoal is made in the United States with North American ingredients at facilities in Kentucky, Missouri, Oregon, and West Virginia. Regional sourcing means the wood mixture can vary rather than coming from a single tree species or forest. Hardwood materials may include woods common to the surrounding lumber industry, but Kingsford does not identify a single universal species recipe for every bag.

Modern production still relies on mill wood residuals and byproducts from the wood-products industry. The material is carbonized, crushed, blended, pressed into the familiar pillow-shaped briquettes, and dried. In other words, the product’s century-old foundation remains remarkably intact: turning material left behind by another industry into a useful, marketable fuel.

Kingsford now offers Original and Professional briquettes, Match Light products, flavored and hardwood varieties, grilling pellets, and other smoking and grilling products. It remains the leading name in American charcoal, an extraordinary result for a business that began as Henry Ford’s solution to a mountain of sawmill scraps.

The next time you light a charcoal grill, remember that those little black briquettes connect automobile manufacturing, Michigan forests, industrial chemistry, Thomas Edison, George Washington Carver, and one of America’s earliest large-scale waste-recovery ventures.
