How to Build a Bench from Old Wood
Sometimes you have old wood that people think it’s no use and want to get rid of it. But you can make use of them, turning them into useful furniture. Building a bench from old wood is like recycling the material, as you don’t have to cut down trees.
This video shows you how to build a bench from old wood collected from an old half-timbered house. The bench is quite large, weighs 100 kilos, and is truly unique. Because the woodworkers burn the outer layer of wood and carbonize the piece of furniture, old oak beams are transformed into a black bench.
Simon Köder and Tobias Thimig will guide you through the complete process:
- Step 1: Remove all the nails and staples in the timbers completely. Brush off unwanted stuff on the beams and cut the timbers to a designed length for the bench. Make sure we have no crooked sides on the wood.
- Step 2: Next, prepare the feet of the bench using solid black steel. We want to give the feet an individual look by letting them rust.
Wipe the feet with alcohol to remove dirt and grease.
Roughen the steel with a fine sanding pad. This opens the pores of the surface. This is important so that the steel can rust.
Spray a special mixture of 250 milliliters of vinegar to 750 milliliters of water on the feet of the bench. This mixture will cause the surface of the metal to oxidize.
- Step 3: 9.30: Use a gas burner to char the surface of the wood. With the flame, Simon goes slowly and carefully over the beams.
We use this to make the wood more durable; the contraction of the wood fiber and charcoal on the surface of the beams also discourages fungi and pests.
- Step 4: 13:15: Next, grind the charcoal layers of the beams, grinding away dead material. Then use a brass brush to brush off the surface of the beam again until you see the wood's original color.
- Step 5: 16:15: Oiling the beam with a natural care oil
- Step 6: 19:00: Drill holes on the beams and turn sockets into drilled holes on the beams.
- Step 7: 19:45: Apply a natural spray wax finish to seal the surface so that you don’t have black butts when you sit on the bench later.
- Step 8: 20:15: Now connect the bench feet to the beams to complete the process.
That's it. I hope that after watching the video, you can know how to build a bench from old wood.
