Do you know what today is?
It's mommy's birthday.
Did you say happy birthday?
No happy birthday?
The shade! Wow.
Well guess what else?
It's a big day because
I'm performing at the
Houston Livestock Show
right now!
Can I get a high five?
Right.
I get more love on a Wednesday.
High five. Ooh, that was lazy.
Hopefully you'll be more excited
tonight.
Where do I even begin?
I gotta warm up. I think I have to sew a button
on my show jacket. I need to get some tea.
Get my hair done.
I need to get the slip things for my
shoes because I don't know what the stage is
gonna be like and we can't trick it off.
It's a big day. Mommy? Yes?
Can we go skate?
Not today, honey.
We're not gonna go skate. Mommy has to perform
in front of 75,000
people. We'll roll a skate
on another day.
Wow, thank you.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are 11 hours
from showtime and
I haven't even gotten out of bed
to get my hair done. I'm gonna be late
for soundcheck.
Thank you.
Hair's did. So we can
scratch that off the list and now I'm headed
to soundcheck.
I might be. I might be
an hour late.
Actually, I'm just not saying anything.
I'm happy to be here. I'm gonna get there.
I got all my things and I'm ready to soundcheck.
And
then I have to get back
to the house, get
the kids, get my clothes,
head back up to the venue
and stay there until showtime.
It's 1231.
I ain't had nothing to eat. Lord help
I don't pass out on this
stage. I just can't
afford to do that. Not for all these people. That would just
be embarrassing. That would be
quite embarrassing.
I hope this tea is spilling.
Although it's not at all.
I want some drips.
That is so great. What's hitting you?
It's hitting me in
little spurts.
Oh, wait a minute. I don't know.
I just gave a ticket to my sis so she could come
and see me perform at the rodeo.
You know?
I went on field trips
to the rodeo, brah.
To say you're doing a rodeo?
Like Janet Jackson
performed at the rodeo. Let me just put it in perspective.
Beyonce performed at the rodeo.
Legends that hit
this stage. You know?
My last time
going, I saw Maroon 5.
And I was like, yo, this is like big.
The sound's great. It just felt big.
Once you hit the rodeo stage,
you've made it. You know what I mean?
You've done it.
This is how I found out
What are your
birthday plans? Hey, bro, trying to figure that out
now. Just moved back to Houston.
Would you like to perform with us at the
rodeo on my birthday?
I said, OMG, that would be awesome!
That's how I got asked
in a DM.
Oh my God, there he is!
It's the NRJ!
Girl!
Wait, do I make a left
or a right at Carvey?
No, no, no. Don't turn on Carvey.
Oh, straight?
Yeah, turn left on Lake
16 Drive.
Oh, stop me! Stop!
If I was doing, like, Regret
or something, this would be easy, but like
I'm too vulnerable.
Oh, you're doing
so good!
Look at all the cowboys!
Yeehaw!
I had to get it out.
Come on, rodeo!
Yeehaw!
There it is!
You know I saw that the show is sold out.
The stadium holds 70,000
people. On the radio, Bundy said
they sold 71,000
tickets. How in the heck?
What in the heck is happening?
Where are we?
Hello, how are you?
Good, I'm here to transport you wherever you need to go.
Okay, I'm here for soundcheck.
Okay, perfect.
I'm Toya, by the way.
...
We're good!
We're good, we're good.
I only got that far with you.
What do you mean?
We're good, we're not slowing it down.
We just started, just watch.
Are you crying?
If I cry, my throat
gonna swell, I can't.
This is my brother, Gavin.
He also does my
found production
and all that.
It's going down.
I'm more afraid to sing
Happy Birthday to my mom directly
to her than I am in front of a big crowd.
I am more
nervous to sing in front of my
family than I am a wide
group of people that I'll probably never see again.
Because it's personal, it's like family.
These are people that, I mean,
I think you think, which we shouldn't think,
but sometimes when we're using
our gift, especially
singing, you're being so,
you're being judged. People are so critical
about singing and who can
sing and so you're being
criticized. It's probably
one of the hardest gifts to share.
Is everything okay?
We're still trying to figure that out now.
Are y'all all ready?
No!
It's 4.50 and y'all not ready.
Y'all supposed to be here
no later than 4, like 4.45.
Here's the thing. I have a
full-blown dressing room.
I can, if you FaceTime me right
now, I can instruct you where everything is for
my outfit for tonight.
Y'all come half ready.
Okay. That's good.
Come finish getting dressed here in this
part or y'all are not making it
here. Okay.
It's all good.
Okay, so turn around. Everything is on that rack.
Everything is on the rack.
Grab the pink box. You'll see a pink box
of boots. There's a plastic
bag with a white suit.
Yes, that's it. Right there. Grab
that. Go into the
bathroom. There's my makeup bag.
It's in a plastic bag. It don't look like
nothing. I want you to grab
my perfume and like some deodorant
and wax. Okay.
You see that tin? You see that?
Yeah. Yep. You got the perfume. Yep.
You got the oil. Yep.
Hey, I owe you.
Come on. No, you didn't.
Oh my God.
What?
Thank you.
I'm really out here.
Bruh.
I am...
It's hitting me that this is getting real.
This is so real. My makeup
is almost done.
We're hours and change
from show time.
And here's a
funny little
you didn't know fact.
Fun fact here. I'm an asthmatic.
And
I'm allergic to
horses. Although I love the
rodeo, I'm full blown
allergic to horse standard.
And I guess because they're loading the horses
in right now, my chest
is starting to tighten up a bit.
And I'm already
nervous.
But now
I'm taking these big
deep breaths.
I'm like,
yeah, just hope I don't
have an asthma attack on stage.
You're still not dressed for the show.
Huh?
Talking about wardrobe.
I'm still not dressed because my clothes
aren't here.
I was supposed to go home and get dressed.
But
down check ran over a bit.
And it was a bigger risk for me to
try and go home
and get clothes. So I stayed here.
On all sides.
Holy macaroni
and cheese. Holy mac and cheese.
Do you understand? Period.
In Jesus name.
Oh my gosh
We're an hour away from show time.
My babies are here.
My clothes are here. My mama's here. My sister. My brother.
It's all good.
Just waiting to go on.
He's excited. Tyson's
excited. DeeDee's excited. You can see
some horses? You can see horses?
What do you mean far? She's like, girl,
stop.
Everything's coming together.
I got it.
I just need my boots now.
I'm all over the place
mentally. Because it is in my
hometown, of course everybody's
going, hey, where my this? Hey,
help me with that. Hey, I ain't got my tickets.
What you wearing? Can I borrow a shirt?
Nervous child.
Excited. Ready to kill it.
That's what's actually bringing
the joy and the peace. Because it's like, my kids
are going to be out there. And no matter what,
I don't care what I sound like, I'm still mommy.
And they're still going to be proud. That's what's wonderful
about it. But it's also like, I want to give
them my best because
of them.
That was amazing.
It's done.
It was a success. Even through
all the craziness.
Now it's time to put
the kids to bed.
And it officially feels like
night.
