Hi, in this video, you will discover how to give volume to your drawing with a simple white pencil,
through a demonstration in digital drawing on ipad,
but traditionally, you will see that it is really the same thing, it is the same principle.
The idea is to give you a way to enrich your drawing style,
and of course to go further than to use the black pencil all the time.
And suddenly, at first, in this video, I show you quickly how I made the portrait drawing,
then I tell you when to put white and how.
And be careful, the white must not be put too early or too late,
so watch well until the end of the video to know the right timing.
So let's go, the drawing in black and white, we stay very simple, we just do the sketch,
it's the same in real life, in traditional.
There, there is just what changes, I don't know if you noticed, but my paper is gray,
that is to say that it has a tint, in life too, you have to take a tinted paper,
what is called a half tint, that is to say that if we put on a shader,
the tint of the paper, the tint of your paper, whether it is gray, whether it is brown, whether it is blue,
whether it is purple, of all colors, it must be at level 5 of gray.
Maybe it doesn't mean anything to you, but here it is, it's a half tint,
that is to say that the whitest white is 10 and the blackest black is 1.
And what makes that between the two, we have a half tint which is level 5.
And if you don't really see what it is, you type scale of values on google,
you will see, it's quite simple, it's just a half tint.
And don't worry, at the level of paper, on a large surface,
at the giant of the Beaux-Arts, at Cultura, you ask for a half tint paper, they know what it is.
Generally, all brands have their range of half tint papers.
I recommend the Clairefontaine, which are very very good.
Otherwise, there are the Strathmore, which is a brand from the United States,
but which is distributed by Royal Talens, which is a Dutch brand, I think.
And so, don't worry, I'll give you the demonstration in a few days, it's recorded.
Anyway, it's a live model demonstration on the Strathmore paper in gray half tint.
Which is a very very good paper, I recommend it, it's great, I love it, it's my favorite paper.
I will also talk about other papers, so I invite you to subscribe if you are interested,
because there are several papers in the world, and there is paper that is made for sketching,
there is paper that is made for painting, etc.
So I go back to my drawing, sorry for the discretion.
So the drawing, I continue it, I did the construction, now I'm starting to do the beard.
Be careful with the beard, it can scare some people,
but if you look closely at the beard, you see there is a kind of movement,
a movement of beard circulation, it's a little bit like wicks, you see.
A wick is a direction, a fringe too, a direction, a line, you see there is a left-right direction,
and in haircut, there is a movement, the movement of the haircut, it's the same for the beard.
If you can see the movement of the beard, in fact it's very simple,
you just have to draw the movement, to illustrate just a little bit,
and don't worry, you just leave it like that, with a tint that serves as a line, which is dark, and the half tint.
And just at the end, we're going to put white on top, and you'll see it does all the magic
to represent the beard without going into detail, while giving volume and texture.
That's what I love about drawing, you choose where you want to put your effort,
where you want to suggest, and the more you suggest, the better it is,
because you're going to create in the head of your spectator a form of commitment,
of stimulation, of imagination, you stimulate your spectator to imagine what it is.
And it's much more powerful than drawing everything, that's why we prefer,
that's why people tend to prefer to read than to read a comic book.
Of course, there are people who are much more visual, who need a film and a lot of action,
but generally, what survives over time is reading,
which allows people to visualize.
So here I continue, I stay very simple, I don't complicate too much,
I look at my reference photo, the black areas, and I transcribe them on my drawing.
There is a jump in time, it's normal, the drawing lasts only 15 minutes,
there I made a jump of 5 minutes, but you see there I just flattened,
I put depth in my drawing, and now we're going to put relief,
we're going to put volume, that is to say, we moved back with the black,
now we're going to put white to advance some details of the face.
And you see, what I love the most is to make the wet effect,
the wet effect on a face, where is it wet? It's the eyes.
I don't know if you see the white dots on the eyes, well that's a wet effect.
The more white you put where you need it, and very little,
in fact it really attracts the eye and it really makes the thing alive.
In fact, the eyes have a few small dots where it's wet,
at the corner of the eye and at the bottom of the eyelid, as you can see on my drawing,
and that attracts the eye really well.
There is also another area that is wet, which is a bit dirty anyway,
it's at the level of the nose, a shiny nose, you know why it's a shiny nose,
it's because of the fat of the nose.
Well, in fact, here too, it's in photos, it's interesting.
Well, in photos, the nose is too fat, it's not very pretty,
but in drawing, we just put a little dot, in fact it brings out the whole nose,
and it also makes the nose have a certain height.
So the whiter it is, the more the nose moves towards the viewer,
which gives relief to the whole face.
And that's what's pretty.
In fact, you shouldn't mix white and black, you have to be careful,
if you don't see what I mean, try to imagine a gradient,
a gradient from white to black.
You see, you'll never have black in white or white in black,
so you really have to see that as a gradient, a scale of value,
that is to say that there are black areas, there are gray areas,
the half-tint and there are white areas, you never mix white and black,
that's really important.
And it's once you've put all the black you need,
and there you just add white, and not a lot,
it's in terms of ratio, it's 90% black and gray, half-tint,
and just 10%, even less than 10% white.
And if you put too much white, you're going to break the contrast of the colors,
and so it's going to make your drawing very poor in terms of composition.
And composition is a step above drawing,
it's when you master it well, that's why I like to talk about it a lot,
it's not just about placing the face well in a shot of your frame,
or putting the characters in a shot, in a scene,
it's also a story of colors, it's also a story of lines,
shapes that modulate the direction of the look.
So I don't have time to talk about it, but I invite you to subscribe to this channel,
put a little like if you liked this video,
and there are plenty of other videos on my channel,
I invite you to watch these advanced courses for artists,
and I'll see you in the next video!
