Hi the artist, so in this video I will explain my method to draw portraits in less than 15 minutes.
This will allow you to draw a lot more and therefore to progress much faster.
So in the program, first we will see the setting up of the portrait, then how to draw the elements of the face
and finish with the shading. Besides, it is the shading
which is very important here to follow because it is a simplified method from my 10 years of drawing.
So let's go, here I start to sketch the silhouette, it's always the same base as my previous videos,
I'm talking about the silhouette which is very very important here.
But there is something different, there is something to add in addition and I don't know if you noticed, but Abbé Pierre
has a triangular face here, you see.
The top of the two triangles is at the level of his temples,
with his hat, and the tip of the triangle at the bottom is the tip of his beard and the more you will tend to see
the shape of the faces of the people you draw, the easier it is for you to draw them
and achieve the resemblance. You will see that my drawing is not 100% similar, but we recognize it is Abbé Pierre
in a very very easy way. I showed this drawing to a lot of people who didn't see the reference photo and they recognized Abbé Pierre.
Obviously, there are his eyebrows which are very ...
which is very marker of his face with his glasses and his nose.
And you see here, I placed the elements very quickly,
obviously, in a very very simple way, just small lines, just small markers.
His nose, I don't know if you noticed, but I drew a kind of contour of the nose, in a very simple way.
No need to complicate yourself, no need to complicate things because here we are in a drawing that is very short,
15 minutes, so in addition the video is accelerated to
150 times, that means 1.5 times, that means I didn't even reach the 15 minutes.
And here, you see, I just separated the elements
of the face, for example, the nose,
his hat, his beret, with the rest of his body, the rest of his head. It would have been the same if he had hair,
with the level of his beard. You see, it's just construction traits that allow you to move forward
easily and step by step towards the resemblance of the face. You see, it's just that, no need, you see, I didn't focus
on one area to move on to another. It's in a very very smooth way, in its entirety, in the whole, each time,
and we go there in a more and more precise way.
And here I start to contrast a little more because the elements of the face are well placed, you see,
I already placed a small line for the eyes, you see, we immediately know where to place the nose,
we immediately know where to place the mouth, you see, the mouth in terms of proportions, don't forget that it is
at the third
between the base of the nose and the base of the chin. If you don't know what I'm talking about, I invite you to watch other videos
on my channel that talk about the proportions of the face.
Then, you see, when you have placed the elements of the face, the last step is a story of value and shadow.
And I don't know if you fold your eyes,
fold your eyes hard now, you see the areas that are dark, which are for example the hat.
Yes, if you see in terms of value, in terms of value,
the hat is dark, it would have been the same for maybe the hair, if he had black hair.
But there is also shadow under his eyes, there is also shadow under his nose, under his mouth, and that's where we're going
accentuate our shadows. You'll see how I'm going to do them in the drawing.
So here for the beard, he has a white beard, so be careful,
it's a little harder when you draw a beard that doesn't have a dark value.
It's mostly in the outline, but the outline, you have to be careful, you have to go there in a very smooth way.
Like I'm doing here, you see.
Otherwise, for his glasses, it's very easy, you just draw the outline, if he has square glasses, try to make them square.
You don't need to have
very similar shapes of glasses. If it's square, draw square, if it's round, draw round.
It seems really enough. And be careful at the eyes, you have to place them where you need to.
And help yourself with the glasses. For example, there, you see, we have the eyes that touch the top of the glasses.
Be careful, because often we tend to put the eyes in the middle. We always tend to put
the elements we draw in the middle of other elements. Be careful, that's a cognitive bias of our brain.
You have to measure what you draw, and it's important.
Obviously, there is an analytical side that can repel some people, but there is a moment when you want to progress.
You have to analyze what you see, and also understand
the mistakes that are repeated in your drawings. And that, you can't really
guess it by yourself. That's why I invite you to take classes.
If you want to take it with me, it's in the description.
You also receive 28 minutes of free lessons to see a little bit how I teach.
You just have to enter your email, and also you join my courses.
My courses by email, those are free, there are 5 per week approximately, where I send little lessons of
professionalism, we will say, advice. You see, as if we were in a bar, we took a drink together,
and you asked me questions. There is no drawing, it's just professional advice on how to draw characters, how to find clients,
how to promote yourself, how to become an artist, how to become an illustrator, all that.
And if you're interested, it's in the description. So I repeat the three steps. First, you make the silhouette, which is the most important.
It's here, don't forget to tell you that here, the butterfly, for example, has a triangular face. You make a triangular shape, you see.
Even if my face is a little wider,
the fact of respecting the basic geometric shape,
I can achieve a resemblance. Then, it's the elements of the face, where you just have to sketch a little bit where the eye is,
where the right eye is, where the left eye is, where the eyebrows are, where the nose is, where the mouth is, in a very very simple way.
And well, separate the elements, that is to say, separate the hat, separate the hair, separate the beard, also separate
the area of the eyes, also separate the glasses, and so on. And there, you contrast a little more, and there, at the level of
shadows, you just have to look at it in terms of values. That is to say that
the darkest values are the hat, the glasses, then we have shadows under the eyes, we also have shadows under the mouth, a little bit.
And we stay very very simple like that, and it really allows you to build a face in 15 minutes.
