AI GeneratedThe Calgary Flames continue their winless start to the season with a 4-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks, remaining the only team in the league without a point. Amidst the struggle, Idar Sounyev scored his first career NHL goal. Meanwhile, reports from Elliot Friedman link disgruntled forward Connor Zary to the Vancouver Canucks as trade rumors intensify.
The Connor Zary situation continues to get hotter
and hotter and it was a key topic of
discussion for Elliot Friedman on Saturday Night Headlines.
Plus, the Calgary Flames continue their
bid for the cleanest tank ever,
despite Idar Sounyev trying to give this team some goals.
We're going to get to all that more in this video,
but first I want to welcome you to Flames Digest.
I'm Mark Griffith. If you're new around here
and you love the Flames, make sure you subscribe so
you can stay up to date on all the latest news,
updates, reports, and rumors revolving around
your Calgary Flames. We would love to welcome you
to the Flames Digest family and the Flames
came into last night's game as the only team without
a point they still have yet to win a game
and lo and behold in case you missed it
the Flames well they just did what they do they lost 4-2
to Anaheim last night it they kept it close I guess
is what we can say you know it was tied
in the third period but they just could not get
this one out against the Anaheim Ducks awesome
to see Sounyev get his first career goal that was so cool
to see in person um but the Flames just
could not get it done which
is too bad they they had really good moments in this game but they just
could not pull it out and to be quite honest once again it
was in no thanks to the goaltending as
we get to the box score here Dustin Wolf gives up four goals
on 28 shots for once again a well
below sub .900 save percentage he is off to one
of the worst seasons a goalie has ever had through
the first three games um but he is just it's
not necessarily like he played awful or anything but
these statistics are catching up to him like he's he's just
not stopping enough pucks which is too
bad again can you blame him for the loss not necessarily
but it was tough we got into the
goal scores like I said Sounyev did score
which was amazing to see you could see how much that goal
meant to him he's a bit more of a nonchalant kind of guy
but he really erupted with emotion there
which was so cool a huge congratulations
to him again Morgan Frost scored a really
clean and tidy goal actually set up by Matty Coronado
who gets two assists on the night
pretty sure it was yesterday's video
or maybe the day before where I said you know where are Frost
where's Coronado where's Gritton I mean Gritton
got demoted Sunyaev got to play on the first line
but great to see Frost and Coronado get on the score sheet there
and then Nemitz and Ball were
actually the best D pairing Nemitz got an assist in this game
which was great but they were both
also a plus two which isn't exactly easy
to do when you lose by a couple goals but I didn't
necessarily think they played amazing or anything
but they were definitely our best D pairing which
was you know a big shout out to them
for playing really really well for the full box score here
I'll just pull it up for a second feel free
to pause take a look at the entire stats here I mean
it's it's too much for me to read through all of them
but I always like to throw them in there just
in case you're interested in taking a look
but like I said I would say the biggest offensive
driver last night was Matt Coronado sure it
was a really nice finish by Frost on Frost's goal but
I thought Coronado getting the primary assists
on both goals for the Flames was really really good
here as you can see he got a couple assists there's
his full kind of box score for just him he had a
shot on goal as well it was kind of funny
for Sunyaev's goal as well you almost were disappointed
in the play that Coronado originally made where he tried
to go around the defender and then went
behind the net but then made a nice pass
which was great but how could I not you know shout out
the main man himself as well the one goal first career NHL goal
for Sunyaev he was a plus one on
the night in a little bit under 16 minutes
of playing time had a couple shots as well so big
for him he obviously scored the tying goal actually
that tied this one at two as you can see here the
graphic isn't quite right because it's from the left side
but still this is exactly you know the
stats as you can say as you can see scored late
in the second period to tie it was five on five
uh it was against billy who
so this is just one of the many you know graphics that i'll be able
to make now which I think is just so cool
but as you can see goal number one of this season as we
know it was his first career goal on a wrist shot
and he had a little quote as well he said you
dream about it scoring your first goal
and here it is so once again I think he's going to be the
guy who maybe he didn't start the year
with the Flames he's probably here to stay I would be
really really upset to be honest if he's the guy
who goes out once Huberto is healthy I think the
fan base would absolutely agree with me there
because it just seems like he wants it so bad
and he clearly has some offensive prowess to his game
and can get some goals so would love
to see Sunev stay up now uh if we take
a quick little look at the standings here i mean this is
one version of it if we get the wild card picture
as you can see we're nowhere in sight let me
remove my head so you can see the full thing here we're
the only team again in the league that
doesn't have a single point uh in terms
of the Western Conference here i mean LA and Chicago
are barely ahead of us they only have two points a piece
but um yeah we're still the only team
without a point as we pull up a little meme here uh
from the Flames Reddit it was has your team
earned a point this season the quote of course
the season started almost two weeks ago every
single team is there except us we're saying uh
yeah we we still don't have any points but you
just gotta laugh through the pain our next opportunity
to get a point though comes funnily
enough against Anaheim once again
is as you can see through five games we've played Seattle a
couple times Vancouver Anaheim
and Colorado zero points zero wins we haven't even lost we haven't
even got a Daryl Sutter point that was our closest one four two
but our next one is actually over in
Anaheim on Tuesday so a place where we never used
to be able to win period now we're the worst team
in the league will we have a chance uh i don't know i'm
not too sure i'm not gonna hold my breath
on it now let's move on to the first i guess big Zary f-bomb here
of the season f-bomb of course
meaning a Friedman bomb as if you
were watching you know Saturday Night Headlines last night
Elliot Friedman he was talking about Zary in the Zary situation
and he made quite a quote here and
linked Vancouver uh to the disgruntled forward
that's currently playing with the Wranglers he said i do
think Vancouver is one of the teams that has looked at Zary
so that's you know Friedman officially
linking the Vancouver Canucks to Connor Zary could
a trade work out i was kind of talking
to Mark Pi who's the host of Canucks Digest about it
and he seems down he's like yeah we'll throw in
a fourth or fifth round pick to make it work
and i thought you know without retention i'm down for
for anything at this point
but in terms of you know the cap space Vancouver can afford to take
Zary they are doing great in terms of their cap space
as you can see from the graphic here
so they absolutely could make something work
if they wanted to whether it was you know we would
prefer not to retain on Zary's salary it's not like it's that high
but I guess it's that high
for a player going through what he's currently
going through another quote here from Friedman
continuing he said I don't get the sense anything is imminent right now
so he definitely is ready
to link Zary to certain teams
but it doesn't sound like anything is absolutely imminent right now
for the Flames which is kind
of funny we'll see how things go you know as he continues to play
for the Wranglers obviously he had a very good debut there
the other night so we'll see in terms
of his contract it's it's just 3.77 mil at least
that's what this one says I always thought it was
3.75 but that's very affordable and obviously expires in 2028
so it's it's quite close Friedman
had another comment on you know the retention
so he said the Flames only have one retention spot
available and they don't want to retain money
so it's probably going to take something creative
again we would prefer not to retain if it's
to Vancouver you know they definitely don't need
there to be retention they just obviously wouldn't give up
as much to acquire him I do think Zary
would instantly just be a part of the Canucks lineup
though for us you know in terms of our
cap space as well we have the space to retain
but like Friedman's saying it's not like we necessarily
want to use another retention spot on Zary we'd rather
be able to you know just get this over and
done with and it's funny Friedman isn't
the only one talking about it this was a comment actually
from a recent video on the channel someone said 3.775
is a lot for a guy that was in the press
box on game two probably had something
to do with the decision to place him on waivers but it's also
significant contract for another team to take
a chance on him I always see 3.775 mil as not that
much but it is true not everyone has our cap space it's funny
because you can look at Vancouver
and they do have the cap space
but not every team is like that i don't think Zary's gonna
go to a contender that's in a cap bind anyway
but that is obviously something to consider
now it is i guess a bit of a buy low case here
for whoever would be acquiring him as you can
see the strengths are you know goals
per 60 giveaways per game he does pretty good that's
not too bad can we actually make
this a little bit different yeah there this is even better so
his goal rate leaves a case for buying low
which is fair enough he does give the puck away less
often than most qualified skaters though
which you know you look at advanced stats here maybe
i'm just trying to sell Zary but um yeah weaknesses
his overall scoring rate trails the middle of the
pack and that's fine i mean he hasn't necessarily
been given the best opportunity so it is a buy low
scenario for a lot of teams
but i'm almost here to say hey Zary's great let's let's sell let's
sell as high as possible um last little thing here
is another thing to sell him up is penalties drawn
and taken so he definitely draws more penalties than he takes
so that's another reason
why we could say hey he's worth something maybe he's worth more than
a fifth or a fourth round
pick maybe he could still go for a second i mean i'm just in dreamland
when i say that um but yeah
i would like to say that he still has some qualities
that we could sell but again i'm not
gonna you know hold my breath on that so what should Calgary
do with Zary either a wait for a
better offer because there's clearly nothing good
right now it hasn't been for the past season and
off season or should they move him for just
a practical return now get rid of this scenario
get rid of the drama and just you know leave it
in the past water under the bridge feel free
to let me know down below in the comments
and speaking of comments let's get into the comment
of the day to wrap up this video as we love
to do here on the channel comes from yesterday's
video of course the clean new comment
of the day graphic this one was funny here from Daryl
Sutter's favorite account saying we're winning
the race to the bottom as you can tell that one
got a few likes and it just is true i mean it's it's definitely
a rebuild year it certainly is
turning into an absolute tank we're oh
and five our worst season we've ever had um so yeah we are
winning the race currently it's
a close race again there's teams like chicago um philly and la that
are right there but so far we're winning the race
to the bottom at zero points thank you so much for
watching this video please subscribe

of your day
