AI GeneratedThe Vancouver Canucks are reportedly shifting their trade strategy as the NHL deadline approaches. Despite previous claims of avoiding short-term rentals, management is now actively seeking a center and is open to Unrestricted Free Agents (UFAs). Additionally, there is significant uncertainty regarding Brock Boeser's future with the team due to contract disagreements.
Elliot Freeman reveals an insane Vancouver Canucks trade update,
including management actively looking for a center
at this year's NHL trade deadline, listening to offers on UFAs,
and we get a major update on the Brock Besser situation,
including Brock speaking on it himself.
We're going to break all this down and more later on in this episode,
so you're not going to want to miss this.

We'll keep you up to date on everything to do around the Canucks,
because the next 56 hours is going to be insane.
Well, with that, we're going to hop straight into this today,
where we did see Elliot Freeman join the Donnie
and Dolly podcast and speak on the Canucks.
He said the Canucks are actively looking for a center they can keep
with term, but they're also listening to UFA centers.
Now looking at this, the biggest thing with this and what's shocking
is we've seen Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford both say,
hey, we don't want rentals. We want to have this team
of players that we can keep going into next season.
We constantly bring up Zadorov, Lindholm, how they walk for nothing.
But seeing the Canucks going out and maybe wanting to acquire
a center on a one-year deal, does this kind of shock you
on just the kind of changeup the Canucks are currently having?
yeah it's almost like a complete 180 where they're
not completely committing to going to UFAs but
they're not entirely ruling it out
and it's very shocking considering where their stance has been
and considering what happened last season where
because of Zadorov and Lindholm like you said
Jim and Allvin they had to come out
and say hey we're not interested in long in one-year rentals or
just UFAs in general we want to get guys
that we can go out we can lock down for a long amount of
time so we don't have to worry about this or have
a bunch of contracts expiring around the same time
And in terms of Brock Besser, that is a big one, too.
And we're going to get into that in a second, of course.
But as far as them just saying, hey,
we are now willing to go towards the rental route,
it's very shocking in all aspects.
But I think the biggest thing that's telling
of it is that maybe this management does not
have the faith in this team to pull off
a multi-year playoff window to have open or
Stanley Cup window.
They're kind of saying, hey,
maybe this season is a bit lost at this point.
or even though we're just on the cusp of a playoff push,
we're still in that wildcard race.
And if we go on a heater,
we can still get in a good playoff position
to maybe not even have a wildcard spot
and get into that third spot in the Pacific.
However, with the way that the Canucks management
is almost looking at this,
they're looking at it going,
if we don't lock Besser down,
we're basically going to just give up on this season
and just plan for the next few seasons
so we don't have to go into a rebuild
by trying to keep this season alive.
However, as a result of that,
they're going to find themselves
in a very sticky situation
where we're either going to go with a lot of rentals
or end up paying a lot of money in big contracts
and i mean the biggest thing is we know this
Canucks team they have Philip Hischier
as their second line center right now Hertl has been
outstanding on the Vancouver Canucks, Pito has been slumping quite a bit
but this team desperately
does need a number two C, i think Hertl would be an awesome winger
or someone that could fill out
that third line center position if they want to make a deep run
but looking at some possible UFAs
i know we talked about yesterday
in the video where there's a lot of guys that are RFAs or
contracts they could acquire a multi-year deals
but it's going to get very interesting just
looking at the current UFA centers i mean Brock Nelson
is the top of the list you can see him
in New York Islanders or he is up in age the Canucks could go
and acquire a guy like this but i very
much rather them stay with the plan maybe move out some pieces pick up
a guy a young player maybe
even an RFA to fill out the team i don't love
the fact of going out using cap space and pieces to
acquire guys like Ryan Donato or Brock Nelson
or whoever the UFA center might be Nick Bukastad's
another name I don't know how the Canucks can justify
this with all the UFAs and I know there's
only two on forward but I mean they're two big names Brock Besser
and Pius Suter but having UFAs
already on this team at the forward group there's
a lot of guys coming off the books in a couple of
seasons Teddy Bluger's one Connor Garland's a big one
this is a team that really needs to figure out
the direction they're going
and this has been a failure of a season in my opinion after just being
one goal away from advancing
to the Western Conference Finals last year I mean
looking at this if they can go out pick up a UFA have
a good run with them and put all their money
into this guy in the offseason would you be fine
with that or would you rather just not pay the
premium for a guy like
that in the offseason starting a bidding war and just say hey we're
gonna acquire a guy with term right now
and that's going to be the player we want yeah it's tough
especially when we're looking
at this graphic here exactly where on the surface like we were
thinking okay they're not going to be too much expiring
at the same time if they were to go with
terms but when we look at in two seasons
from now we've got Connor Garland on there you got Teddy
Bluger and Keeper Sherwood those are guys
that are playing really solid this year particularly
Connor Garland Keeper Sherwood where they're going to want to try
and extend them and keep them there
as long as possible Connor Garland he is playing
his ass off this year and he's going to warrant
a big extension coming up in two seasons
and Keeper Sherwood as well they brought him in on
one and a half and he's been the best free agency steal
of the entire offseason in the NHL where
he's leading the league in hits he's scoring goals he's one
of the top scorers on the Canucks
he's an absolute wrecking ball he's great for morale
so that's another guy that you're going
to want to keep around
so the Canucks won't get a rental as far as the RFAs or UFAs that are
available right now there's none that really scream out
this guy needs to be signed or this
guy needs to be extended to long term all
these guys i'm looking at that aren't named Brock Boeser
or Brock Nelson but really guys that you're bringing in to try
and go on a one-year run
try and get a cup and then letting them go for basically nothing
which is what Vancouver doesn't
want to do and i don't see any
of these guys being extended long term as long-term Vancouver
Canucks especially when we look at the current team morale
that we have in the chemistry that
we have no it hasn't been the smoothest of sailing this season
but we do have a group of guys that
all care about each other they all get along
with each other for the most part i know that that
problem is gone for the most part now
but they still have a team there they have a lot of chemistry
there and they don't want to do too much
to jeopardize that especially on guys that you're
bringing in that are only going to be there
for a little bit of time they're going to bring in guys
that hey they're here for a good time not a long time
so don't get used to it that's not going to
go a good way in the locker room either
and i mean going back to what Donnie and Dolly had on the
podcast with Elliotte Friedman we've seen on Boeser don't have
a great feeling right now on how things
will end up listing on him all options open
and this led into Brock Boeser today during the media
scrum saying I'm not trying to think about it I honestly have
no idea what's going to happen
and this is when he was asked what's his thoughts
on potentially playing his final game tonight with
the Vancouver Canucks now the biggest thing
with Boeser we know what Boeser is a pure goal scorer
scoring 40 goals last year on pace to score
in the 30s again this season the biggest thing with
Boeser is obviously the injury concerns we haven't seen him
be consistent 80 plus games played I know
it's only 82 games in the season
but you would like to see close to 80 every season but it does
seem like he wants term I mean we've seen
the reports coming out from months ago according to
Frank Servello the Canucks offer Boeser a five-year contract
at 8 million AAV Boeser wants more term
listen Griffin I know he's a fan favorite I know
people want Boeser signed but would you be shocked
if Canucks management said hey we're going
to trade Boeser we're going to get assets we're
going to flip them immediately I mean we've seen it
with JT Miller getting the first round pick
and Mancini he'd trade that first to get Marcus Pedersen
and Drew O'Connor which looks
like steals of pickup do you think the Canucks might go
the route of saying hey we have a UFA
let's move them get more capital maybe they use
that capital to get another UFA and someone with
term unfortunately it's looking that way
and I hate saying it because I'm one of those fans who
wants to see Boeser re-signed i want
to see him retire vancouver canuck in all honesty and that
is what he's wanting with this contract
the canucks were able to meet the aav that he was
wanting of eight million
but he wants more term he wants to retire vancouver canuck he doesn't
want to have this uncertainty of the market coming up again
at a later point in his career where
he's going to be in a position where he's had all
these health concerns maybe he does get two a few
more 40 goal uh seasons as a result
of that but by the end of that term he's going to be very
limited as far as where he can go what money he can get
and he would become a one-year rental
player at that point in his career if he doesn't sign
the long-term deal that he wants so that
goes to show that if Vancouver wants to make
this deal happen they basically have to say to Brock
okay you're going to retire Vancouver Canuck here's
a deal that's going to ensure that you
don't have to worry about going anywhere else
for the rest of your career you don't have to
worry about contract talks for the rest
of your career you are set now with the injuries and all
that that's very concerning for Vancouver to make
an investment like that however from my perspective
i would rather them go out and do that because like i said
with the way that the market is right
now with centers and what Vancouver has as far
as cap space the options are very limited especially
as far as one-year rentals too
which i know that we keep talking about and we don't want to have
to go that route but if you move on from Besser you
are at risk of doing that but if you do move
on from Besser and you're going for another rental why
not have just kept the eight million
dollar rental that you or six and a half million
dollar rental you had with Brock Besser it makes
no sense to do that in my in my eyes at least
however with the way this Canucks management
works and the way that we've seen them flip players just
on a dime and just out of nowhere
with this being a player that there's been a lot
of speculation around it would not surprise me
Vancouver ends up trading him by Friday
and the biggest thing is we know this management group
and the owners want the Canucks to go
on a playoff run they want them to make the playoffs I mean
that's where the money is made
but the other big thing is if Besser is moved this offseason it or
this season I should say at deadline it does seem like players
are going at an all-time high
especially with the board market being
a little skim we're seeing just recently Tampa Bay trading
two first round picks for Yanni Gourde
and Bjorkstrand from the Seattle Kraken and in my opinion both of
these players are not at a Brock level
so maybe the Canucks just capitalize on this and say hey
this is the most we can ever get for him let's do it right now
but what's your guys thoughts on
everything that's happening what's your thoughts
on Elliot Frumin just going in and saying they're
looking at centers including UFA ones
because this one is shocking to me and what's your thoughts on
the Brock Besser situation
and what do you want to happen with Brock Besser by Friday's deadline
let us know down below why you're down there leave
