Video Summary
AI GeneratedThe Boston Red Sox started their season with a 5-2 victory over the Texas Rangers, highlighted by a dominant performance from Wilyer Abreu. Despite a shaky start from opening day pitcher Garrett Crochet, the Red Sox offense and bullpen secured the win, setting a positive tone for the season.
This is huge. The Boston Red Sox
are now 1-0 after the Willier Abreu game.
Yes, I'll break down the monster performance from Willier-Abreu,
as well as how the rookie did in Christian Campbell,
as well as the rest of this Red Sox team to get to 1-0 and really what
to expect today as we play the Texas Rangers once again down in Texas.
Welcome back to Red Sox Digest. I am Houston.
I'm here to break down yesterday's massive win,
as well as what to expect
from today's massive performance from the Boston Red Sox.
We'll break down all of that on this episode of Red Sox Digest.

So again, thank you guys for everything.
But now let's get to it and break down not only how this is huge,
but the Willier-Abreu game.
This was something special.
And this was really, I'm going to say,
the start of a breakout season for this young man.
Now, obviously, through spring, he played not so great.
And when I say not so great, I mean he was 1 for 20 in the box.
He was not great.
He literally couldn't have been worse than he was at the plate.
Batting literally 1 for 20 with a .050,
a .050 of a batting average during spring.
Now, obviously, he was dealing with the GI virus.
He did lose a little bit of weight. It seemed like it took him really
an extended period of time to even get back into the swing of things
and hope to find a rhythm to enter opening day.
We were being told before opening day
and the week leading up to it that Willier Abreu was not even going
to make the opening day roster due to the illness he had been dealing
with that we saw really run rampant through the entirety of the MLB
through spring, including players like Gunnar Henderson, Mookie Betts,
Willier Abreu, as well as a bunch of others across the MLB.
But again, the 1-for-20 start, if you will,
through spring for Willier Abreu really did not mean much at all.
As yesterday, he was the leader for this Red Sox team
and was one of the main reasons that they were able to get
a massive victory over a very, very good team in the Texas Rangers.
Now, we'll start with the lineup.
Honestly, this lineup is going
to be terrifying from Game 1 to Game 162.
I think that really the versatility as well as really the depth that
this lineup really contains is going to cause problems for everyone.
And the reason I say that is because obviously Devers is now at DH
and Bregman is going to be the full-time third baseman for the Red Sox.
But the overall speed as well as power
and the ability to get on base for this Red Sox team is substantial.
Duran was able to only get on base once yesterday via a base hit,
but he was immediately able to steal a bag.
Trevor Story stole a bag yesterday, which is always good to see.
Ended up scoring one of the five runs for the Red Sox.
And then Christian Campbell, the young prospect,
was able to get his first hit.
It came in the top of the ninth inning.
And again, was able to then advance
to second base via balk by the Rangers pitcher.
It wasn't Hernandez who gave up the home run.
But again, was able to advance to second via walk.
But the standout, the leader of the day yesterday,
without a doubt, was Willier Abreu.
You look down in the 7-hole, 3 at-bats.
He scored 3 runs on 3 hits with 4 RBIs and did force a massive walk.
Again, the only at-bat where he did not end up with a successful hit.
to reach base he did work a massive walk.
I believe it was an 8-pitch at-bat going lefty, lefty, a massive.
He looked so mature.
He looked so, I won't use the word perfect,
but he just looked very ready for the moment.
It didn't look like he only had 20 at-bats in spring.
It didn't look like he was dealing
with a GI virus going into spring and trying to battle
into that spring section of time where he just wanted
to get some reps in, so he was
ready for opening day.
That did not seem like the case.
He looked very ready.
He looked very mature, and again,
he did more than just prove it with the numbers in the
box but again if you watch the game he was by far
and away he was having the best at-bats for the
Boston Red Sox and it had the best result in the end not just once
but multiple times now before
I show you the home run from Wilyer Abreu
that really won us the game in the top of the ninth
inning when he did hit a three-run shot
his second home run of the day against the Texas Rangers I
will first acknowledge Garrett Crochet the starter
the opening day starter in the newest edition
pitching wise to this Red Sox team he went five
innings gave up five hits in two earned run he
walked two and struck out four overall
not the best performance from the young ace in Garrett
Crochet now I am not panicking absolutely
not not a chance in in this world where I will be
panicking over that performance from Mr. Crochet
and the reason being is because early on in this
game the first three and a half four four
and a half innings Crochet severely struggled with his
command and it wasn't just in the first inning first six out
no it was something that was there
for the first three and a half four and a half innings
and it was clear like and he was really
working off of two maybe three pitches for the really
the entirety of that and again if you go
back the cutter the fastball and a little bit of the sweeper
or the slider whichever you would like
to address it as, were really the only things being thrown.
I believe he threw his changeup two times in his entire five innings
that he was on the mound.
That is not an exaggeration.
It might have been even once.
I don't have the actual breakdown of pitches thrown.
I can actually look that up by the time we bring you another video
highlighting today's game against the Rangers.
But again, Crochet, he looked good.
He did not look great.
I'm not going to stretch the truth.
I'm not going to lie to you guys.
He does have the capabilities and does have the opportunities
to really, really excel on this Red Sox team.
And I do still mean that.
I still strongly believe that.
And the reason being is because this offense
that he's going to have behind him
is going to be electric and a powerhouse, to say the least.
And with that and the stuff that you know the command is going to come,
it's opening day, he's on a brand new roster that he has to,
in his mind, he most likely is assuming
that he has to perform at the highest level.
He needs to be in the Cy Young conversation.
He needs to have this many strikeouts.
there's probably a lot of added pressure onto his back
because of the being newly acquired
wanting to get that contract extension
and all the different variables going into it but again
five innings five hits to earn two walks four k's
a 3.6 ERA we're not going to jump on the ERA just
yet because it is only opening day
but again he had he showed a lot of upside but again did not
have the best control over his pitches for the entirety
of the five innings that he was on the
mound nothing to worry too much about
but again not the greatest performance from Crochet and
the Red Sox did end up getting the win it does not go to him
though it goes to Aroldis Chapman
who did relieve after Garrett Whitlock
who did come in and throw two innings gave up one hit
and struck out one he looked good again I don't
think I won't think I say he looked great in this
opening showing but again he did look very very
good Chapman one inning one hit 1K again another
reliever came in in the eighth inning it
was a little earlier than anticipated but again he had
to maintain the score at where it was because again we
were tied at two in the eighth and again
he was able to send it to the ninth where the Red Sox obviously
and Wilyer Abreu were able to
score three runs on his three run shot that we'll get
to in just a second after we break down how
Justin Slaten came in and closed out
the game up three runs for the Red Sox in the bottom of the
ninth inning pitching only that ninth inning
and again striking out only one not giving up the hit
not giving up a walk or any earned runs.
Overall, I really enjoyed what I saw
from these four guys on the Boston Red Sox.
Obviously, the three relief guys were very, very good.
Crochet was good.
He just didn't have all the command in the world,
but I am very confident that that command will slowly
but surely show up for him,
and because of that, he will be right at the top of the list
of when it comes to the best and most
dominant pitchers in the game of baseball.
Overall, a very, very, very fun game to watch.
It was great to see the Red Sox and really just opening day take place.
It's been a long time.
It felt like forever.
And again, we were watching spring.
But again, like we hear over and over again,
spring really doesn't matter.
The second the regular season starts, you're at zero and zero.
And then obviously we go from game one to game 162, not accounting
for your record in spring or any of your stats in spring.
So again, it's good to see meaningful baseball being played once again.
the Red Sox win 5-2 over the Texas Rangers down in Texas
and again Chapman gets a win it's huge
Slayton gets a save which is awesome
to see it looks like that we're going to have a lot of
flexibility for the Red Sox and their bullpen
and really who's going out as the closer depending on
the situation which is always good to see now last thing about Willie
or Abreu before I play
his home run clip which I will
do again Chris uh Clegg I hope I'm saying that right he posted this
on twitter thought this was a really cool piece
of information Willier Abreu had 12 batted balls
hit 108.7 miles per hour
or harder last year he missed a month this spring due to GI issues
today he posted batted balls of quote 108.7 miles per hour
which was a home run 110.7 miles per hour
which was a home run and then finally 110.8 miles per hour
which was his single what a way to start
off the season, and I couldn't agree more.
That Willier Abreu is, game one was the Willier Abreu game,
and it looks like this might end up being one of the breakout seasons
for this young Red Sox player,
and I really can't wait to see how it goes.
Again, here is his three-run home run to end up taking the lead
and winning the game.
Willier Abreu.
High fly shot deep into the alley.
That's way back there, and that ball is gone.
It is out of here.
Abreu again, Sox.
absolutely just electric stuff he was pot he was fired up
and again good ab after good ab after
good AB, it didn't matter if it resulted in a walk, a single
or one of the two home runs for Willier Abreu
in this game he was absolutely electric
and played a great brand of baseball as well as being good
in the field as well, can't highlight
the defensive capabilities that he did highlight and then for
today what we'll wrap up this video with today again
in Texas playing the Rangers once again
for the second game of the third game series,
or three game series, excuse me,
against the Texas Rangers.
And today, I'm not going to say it gets a little easier
because of who we have on the mound.
We do have Tanner Houck facing off against Jack Leiter.
That should be interesting.
Leiter has not really highlighted
or showcased the fact that he's going to look like Al Leiter.
So that's a good thing in our case
because it could be a little bit easier of a performance for us
in the sense of offensive production could
be a bit higher than yesterday,
despite scoring five runs
so look out for the Red Sox offense being able to jump on this young
pitcher again should be interesting can't wait
to see what this young man brings we haven't seen him
at really at all in the sense of he hasn't
been in the big league for that long and been that
consistent at the MLB level
so again that's going to be interesting to see how that plays out but
again Tanner House on the mound
for the Red Sox should look really good I will say this Rangers
team is very very good do not just think
that we're going to brush by them and dominate this
offense and as well as their defense is extremely extremely good
and could be one of the best teams
in the world by the time October comes do not be surprised
so this is a massive win for the
Red Sox thank you guys for watching
and I will see you guys on the next one
