MAJOR Red Sox Pitching UPDATE... This changes EVERYTHING | Red Sox News
Oct 20, 2026
We have some major updates coming out
of the Red Sox organization involving one
of their key young starting pitchers in Brian Baez and how he might
be ready for opening day after dealing with some shoulder inflammation.
Welcome back to Red Sox Digest.
I'm Houston and I'm here to break down all
the new information that we have on our young star pitcher
and how he could be ready for opening day.
I'll break it all down on this episode of Red Sox Digest.
But first, remember, if you're a part of the 85.5% currently watching

We do appreciate all the love and support.
So, again, thank you guys so very much for everything.
But now let's get to it and break it down.
how Baez is right on pace.
Now, there was a lot of discussions on whether or not he was going
to be eligible and was going to be ready by opening day.
Again, we are in the month.
We are less than, what, 24 days away from opening day.
It's exciting.
I can't wait.
But again, are we going to be at full strength?
Now, it's obvious that Garrett Crochet will most likely,
and when I say most likely,
he's going to be our opening day starter for the Red Sox.
He's going to be that guy.
he's our number one guy no surprise there
but Brian Baez last year was one of the top guys in
our starting rotation and now after all
of our new acquisitions it's interesting to see where he
actually will land right now he's listed
as the number five starting pitcher obviously Patrick
Sandoval has not returned he's still dealing
with injury we won't see him until the halfway point of
this up and coming season as well as Cutter Crawford
is also dealing with an injury himself
So two other reliable arms we will most likely see added
to this starting rotation by the time we
are at the halfway point of this season.
It's going to be interesting.
We will be able to add another Southpaw and Sandoval,
which will be huge because only having one, at least
in the starting rotation, isn't exactly what you're looking for.
But again, we're more than well off because of the amount
of talent we went out and acquired this past offseason.
And really the improvements that we're going to see
from players that we've already had from last season.
and the number one guy is going to be Baez.
And the reason I say that is because this kid is only 25 years of age
and he is a flat-out stud.
I know if we look at the baseball savant page,
nothing jumps off the page at you, I should say.
That makes you think, wow, this guy is an elite-level pitcher.
He's going to be an ace and a Cy Young candidate type
of pitcher later down the line.
But just give the young man some time.
He's working out with some of the best all-time baseball players
and pitchers at that.
and when I say that I'm speaking of Pedro Martinez now
that he recently threw a bullpen
but we'll get to that in just a second now last year he
was in the 90th percentile in ground ball
ground ball percentage everything else
was right around league average if not just below it
except the fastball velo
and I honestly I wouldn't be worrying about the injuries making a big
effect on the fastball velo I believe he's going
to be right back near it and again we'll break
down his last bullpen and how that went
and really what the velo was looking at there but the last
thing I'm going to highlight yes he did have
a 4.42 ERA last season I understand but he won
14 games for this Red Sox organization last year
when he was on the mound he went 14 and where is
where's his win loss uh uh 14
and 8 I'm sorry I was looking at his totals I was gonna say he won
28 games last year that didn't happen 14 wins 8
losses last season yes he was playing alongside
a great offense one of the top 10 offenses in all of baseball
and we only got better offensively we
went out and added Bregman Masha is now back
and he seems to be healthy and right Devers is
obviously coming back off the shoulder injuries we
are well put together and with these young
prospects we have more offensive capabilities than
we really had last season and I can't wait to see
how these starting pitchers including Bale as well
as others like Crochet and Buehler all greatly
greatly just just thrive with these offensive capabilities
that they have playing behind them
now back on February 17th I know
this is a little dated Tyler Milliken went out and posted this
video of Bayo throwing now he was literally just going through
the motions it was nothing special
he wasn't even really doing his full wind up he
was just kind of finding his footing and getting
through it now I can't tell you how far he was actually throwing
because that's a huge part of
this but because I don't the angle is literally just of Baio
and really his form and his really
just physique if you will
but then we move on to more recently February 28th where Christopher
Smith posted this as well as an article confirming
that Brian Bale was back throwing the baseball in
a competitive manner where he posted
this tweet Brian Baio throwing his first bullpen since
returning from his shoulder soreness
then we get another one where he reposted that exact tweet
with this as it says Brian Baio says they asked him
to throw 80 to 89 miles per hour and go about
70 to 75 effort he said he is on track
for opening day again this is on february 28th so
these are massive updates massive strides from Baio to really improve
and gain some momentum
going into that opening day really be on track
and find a pace where not only is he working out
But being effective and smart while doing so and not over pushing
his body to really try to physically demand himself to be better.
And when I say better, I mean physically better in the sense
of wellness than he already is, which is good because we don't want
to force anything, have him be set back even more.
And then we lose him for another period of time,
which is not what we want.
We want to see this young man work again to highlight
his baseball reference 14 and eight last year with that 449 ERA.
Again, it's not the greatest numbers in the world
when you look at expected run average.
It's going to be really interesting to see how he does this year.
If we get a relatively healthy Baio, I think he
is another 10-plus win pitcher, just like the last two years.
I know that really goes over everyone's, kind of like,
what we're looking at here, where everyone looks at the ERA,
everyone looks at this, everyone looks at that.
I believe Baio is going to win another 10-plus games
for this Red Sox organization, despite having players like Buehler
and Crochet out in front of him in this rotation, as well as others.
By the halfway point, I think he will be legitimately our number three,
if not our number four starting pitcher.
He had 10-plus quality starts, and again,
with 10-plus wins in these back-to-back seasons,
I really think we're going to see a,
if not better season than this past two.
And again, I just can't wait to see how this young man really performs.
Now, to highlight the article we mentioned earlier,
written by, who was it?
It was Christopher Smith, I apologize,
which was also posted on MassLiveSports Twitter.
He goes on to say Red Sox Alex Cora provided injury updates
on Brian Bayo, Connor Wong, and others.
Again, this is posted on the 26th,
two days before he threw that bullpen.
And again, Fort Myers, Florida, Red Sox starter Brian Bayo,
who was shut down for a few days earlier in camp
because of a shoulder soreness,
will throw a bullpen session Friday, manager Alex Cora said.
The Red Sox still think Bayo will be ready for the opening day roster.
So again, just reestablishing
and reiterating from a much more credible source in the sense
of Alex Cora, that again, we should be right on pace.
Brian Bayo should be right on pace to meet
the opening day standard and we'll be ready
to go.
Now again, do not expect him to be our opening day starter.
It is going to be Garrett Crochet.
But again, the point is the same.
It's very exciting.
I'm now going to play the clip of Brian Bayo working out
in the bullpen with the one and
only Pedro Martinez something that we see we have seen
for the last what two three years from the
Red Sox organization because again Pedro loves
the Red Sox it's something that he is more than
willing to help with and really come in and talk
to these young guys whether they be position
players or starting pitching or just any type of pitcher in itself
so again I'm going to play it
now it's not a very long clip
but again it looks like they're working on his change up based off
the grip that Pedro's
having Bayo
actually perform
so again here it
is yeah Brian
Bayo working out
with Pedro Martinez it's
not the first time we have seen something like this in the offseason
again last year I believe they were working out
in the Dominican Republic not something to be
obviously surprised about and now they're doing it again
but just at spring training the scenery
changes just a little bit
but the idea is still the same a legend working with a young promising
arm in the Red Sox organization something
we should really really enjoy because again
Bayo is only going to get levels
and levels better year after year especially when you add
the level of coaching that you're getting
from Pedro Martinez one of the best pitchers in the
history of baseball again let me know down below
what you guys think about the potential of Brian
Bayo and what to expect this upcoming season thank you guys
for watching and I will see you
guys on the next episode of Red Sox Insider
