The New York Yankees are going all in on the catcher position,
as despite the fact that
Austin Wells will be the main catcher
for the New York Yankees going into the 2027 MLB season,
there are multiple names who the Yankees are also looking at,
as delivered to us by an MLB insider
who has revealed the Yankees, they do need a new catcher.
And this even includes some names that
we have already been very familiar with,
or have even played for the New York Yankees in the past
They were viewed as the catcher of the future
of the Yankees before Austin Wells was.
And now, well, it's going to be hard for us to find people
who are going to call Austin Wells the future
of the Yankees' catching position.
But the Yankees still believe in him.
However, it doesn't change the fact that they want
a right-handed catcher on this team.
Last year, they had Jace Scar for a bit.
They had Ali Sanchez.
And neither of whom were able to do anything
better than what Austin Wells did.
And the problem with what Austin Wells did was it was a bad
season offensively for Austin Wells in every sense of the word.
as Wells he found himself in a very difficult spot putting up
a 186 batting average and a 624 OPS
it got better as the season went on and he is a Gold Glove finalist
so Wells certainly does have
his strengths and he's also maybe the best ABS challenger
in the league however the Yankees want
a catcher to hit the ball a bit better just like
I want you guys to subscribe to the channel if
you are part of that 66% that's not subscribed
it's completely free we got videos every day
but diving into it there are a few different names
that we have to go ahead and look at right
here as Joel Sherman did name six catcher options
for the New York Yankees going into free agency
as there's a lot of free agent options the Yankees can take
and now we are seeing a few different
ones emerge Yankee report did mention
that the Yankees are expected to keep Austin Wells at
catcher next season according to Joel Sherman Sherman
also mentions Carson Kelly Freddie
Freeman Austin Hedges Victor Carantini Luis Campizano
and Gary Sanchez that Gary Sanchez
as possible fits for backup catcher.
Now, obviously, there's a lot to look at here
because we look at all these names
and you count them, you hear them,
and then it's like, I'm sorry, what, 16s?
Who?
Like, I remember Gary Sanchez because,
well, it's Gary Sanchez.
He was on the Yankees.
He was a future star for the Yankees
and forgot how to hit with the Yankees
and then ended up in a nice situation in Milwaukee
who are closing in on beating the Los Angeles Dodgers,
dethroning the champs,
which would obviously be nice to see.
now there's a few different ways we can look
at this for the Yankees right now their depth
at catcher is not good at all look i'm higher
on Austin Wells than most people are i think his
hitting is going to bounce back to a degree
and the fielding is so good it does make him an MLB
catcher in every sense of the word
but they do need to find someone who can play the position
better than JC Escarra on the bench or Ollie Sanchez
who's also around the Yankees so they
need to make a bigger move and we see fans comment
on this stuff all the time like seeing right here
from Tom Royal mentioning that they should cut Stanton
and move on from Jazz and trade for Manny Machado
at third base, which obviously is a big, big move,
and then tell Judge to get in shape
so he doesn't keep getting hurt and trade Trent.
Trent is a free agent, he's leaving,
and go get a better backup catcher.
Out of all of this stuff right here, Tom,
the one that we can be sure about more than any
is the Yankees are going to get a better backup catcher.
And a few names do come in here.
I mean, we see Kelly Campisano, both of those two,
they do bring bats to this team Carson Kelly right here
a very talented catcher would give
the Yankees a pretty good hitting
for average catcher .258 for a catcher is not bad at all
.713 OPS not bad for a catcher at all pretty good
in the RBIs department as well, is he the world's
greatest fielder? No. Is he fine? Yeah, he is, and he
is an offensive catcher in every sense of the word
the same goes for Luis Campusano
who the Yankees would probably really enjoy bringing in, I mean
Overall, .795 OPS and a .265 batting average.
This is the type of guy you see,
and the Yankees derive an 81-81 game split
between these two behind the plate,
between Campusano and Wells.
This is the ideal scenario.
I'm a big fan of Campusano
because his on-base percentage is absolutely excellent.
I mean, an on-base percentage that ranks 36th in the MLB
this past season with a .353.
The man gets on base.
He works a walk like nobody's business.
He does what he has to do.
He knows how to get on base,
and he also does have some pop in that bat to a degree as well,
especially, again, for a catcher where, obviously,
catcher, the hitting is a little bit worse.
Now, with Kelly, we look at the splits,
and there's a guy, Carson Kelly,
is so, so, so obviously someone the Yankees are going to go for.
Look at these splits.
Against left-handed pitchers, Carson Kelly is a 1.079 OPS.
Or, that's not possible. OPS.
He has a .375 batting average.
That is in the 97th percentile of batting average and 96th of OPS.
Austin Wells' OPS was in the fours against left-handed pitching.
Makes sense to a degree.
Wells didn't hit this year, and he's a lefty.
Not too surprising.
Kelly, he's their guy for lefty pitchers.
Wells is a guy for righty pitchers.
The Yankees like Wells, and they plan on keeping him around.
So I honestly think it's going to be Carson Kelly.
If you ask me right now, Chris, who will it be?
I would pick Carson Kelly as who I think it is going to be.
I think the Yankees will pay him and tell him it's a platoon role,
but you're going to play a good deal.
We need more righty bats.
There will probably be instances where he'd step
in as a pinch hitter quite often.
There's also probably some instances where he might DH,
depending on the injuries that the Yankees are dealing with,
because they deal with injuries pretty much every year.
But he's not the only guy listed here.
I mean, we see Furman and Hedges who bring gloves.
Now, the Yankees, they already have one
of the best fielding catchers in the business.
I would imagine they would rather bring in a second one,
or they'd rather bring in someone a little bit different as well.
Furman this season, he was not much better
offensively than Austin Wells at all.
He's someone I don't really see the Yankees going for as much.
He'll be on the list, but I could see them being
a little bit less interested in it.
Austin Hedges, though, yeah, he's a great fielding catcher.
Don't get me wrong, but he also hits pretty well.
He's just a good catcher, honestly, is the best way to put it.
and Hedges is someone who I do think
the Yankees will definitely take an interest in as well as a
platoon guy to put in there with Wells I think Hedges is up there too
when it comes to likelihood
of the Yankees making a move now
with Furman obviously the man his OPS is in the third
percentile of the league his barrel percentage
is in the second he's got 0.0 across let's just
there isn't any to to be completely real about it
so it's a really interesting way to look at it and
then we also look at the other side of it that Carontini
and Sanchez are complete and utter
wild cards of the position I mean we look at Victor Carontini a man
who had a 220 batting
averaging a .627 OPS someone
who feels like a backup option for the Yankees if they can't get
anyone better now Carontini there's not a lot
to go off of to be like oh that's the move that's
who we should go for Gary Al Gary former Yankee
doing Gary Sanchez things I mean that's just
what's happening he's doing Gary's first
of all he gives the Yankees a righty catcher he gives
in power .771 OPS is above league average I mean
the average is .750 he's in the 75th percentile of
OPS he's in the 13th for batting average same Gary
Sanchez he can strike out a lot but when he hits
the ball the ball goes pretty far I don't see
the Yankees going back down the Gary Sanchez role
uh back down the Gary Sanchez path rather I just
don't think it would happen he's good at what he's
good at Sanchez is also in a nice spot in Milwaukee where he
was hanging on by a thread for a while
for his MLB career, I think him and Milwaukee
are going to get a deal done pretty fast,
keep him there, considering how well things have gone.
I'm curious what you guys think, though.
Out of these names, who would you pick
if you could pick one? I would also be remiss
if I didn't very briefly mention Ryan Jeffers.
I know I didn't mention Jeffers.
It's because, well, Sherman didn't mention
Jeffers, and because I have to stop
making stuff up.
I read the comments. I am going to do
a video on Ryan Jeffers and talk about
if that's a likely scenario or if that's
not going to happen. That is coming out.
it'll come out this weekend obviously we're going to talk about Jeffers
because i want Ryan Jeffers
i think the Yankees should actually give him
a pretty nice offer i would offer him and again
i'll go more into detail on this in the weekend
but uh i'd offer him like three years like probably
17 million for like per year on Jeffers i think he's damn good
and he would also give the Yankees
a lead off hitter but uh let me know what you guys think
in the comments down below like this

if you dare have a great day guys stay safe out there go Yankees
