Video Summary
AI GeneratedThis video discusses Klay Thompson's concerning shooting performance during the preseason with the Miami Heat. Despite poor statistics, the narrator argues that Thompson's career track record and the Heat's offensive structure—specifically the gravity created by Giannis and Bam Adebayo—will allow him to regain his form and provide critical spacing for the team.
There appears to be something going on with one
of the greatest shooters to ever pick up
a basketball in one of the newest members
of this Heat organization that has a lot of Heat fans very
concerned going into this upcoming regular season.
I'm here to break down the recent shooting
struggles for Klay Thompson, the veteran presence,
sharp shooting presence at that, that the Miami
Heat went out and acquired this offseason
from a buyout from the Dallas Mavericks. We'll break
down the few games that he played in preseason how he played
in those games and what this means
for Klay Thompson and this Miami Heat organization
and is there any way that the Klay Thompson
everyone expected to see
in Miami actually does return we'll break down all of that on this
episode of Heat Digest but first before we get to the news
and information the NBA regular season
is right around the corner
and if you want to stay up to date with everything Miami Heat
and possibly tag along for some watch-alongs for big games
or even post-game live streams make sure
you are subscribed to the channel as nearly 80%
of you guys watching this video are not currently
subscribed to the channel again we do appreciate all the love
and support whether it is you
subscribing it's you tuning tuning
into these videos leaving a comment anything and everything
we do appreciate it so again thank you
but now let's get to it and break down what is actually
going on with Klay Thompson
and why this is even a conversation at this stage as it's only October
18th the NBA regular season has not begun just yet
but it is on the doorstep of actually taking
place now with that being said Klay Thompson
is going to be or at least is expected to be a very
big piece to this Miami Heat team especially
on the offensive end as he looks to benefit off of
all the attention the two big juggernauts in Giannis
and Bam Adebayo are going to demand this
season on the offensive end where he's going
to be able to move around the three-point line from
the elbow down to the corner
and really benefit from the defender guarding him being sucked in by
Giannis and Bam getting the ball down
in the painted area leaving him wide open for very good
in open three-point shots
which we all expect to him to absolutely torch defense because of it
but based off the pre-season in the games Klay Thompson played
in it doesn't look like this was
the Thompson everyone thought they were going to get
when Miami went out and acquired him via the
buyout from the Dallas Mavericks just a few months ago earlier
or later I should say this offseason
as Thompson this preseason has averaged four points
per game just under two rebounds while
shooting seven of 26 from the field which is 27 percent
and three of 20 from behind the three
point line which again is 15 percent 20
of the 26 shots Klay Thompson attempted this preseason
were from behind the three point line I don't think it'll last
but it is a bit concerning now
before we get to the rest of the news
and information we do have to thank our sponsor
for this video Calshi as on Calshi you can trade yes
or no contracts on practically anything gas
prices the weather sporting events TV show release dates anything
and everything in between and right
now on Calshi there's an awesome promotion if you use
the link down in the description of this video
or in the pinned comment and use code Digest NBA
when signing up new users get 55 added to their
account instantly after making their first 25 trade
on Calshi using that promo code and
link and right now you can get in on the action on Calshi
and you again you can trade on anything
and everything including the players three pointers made
per game this season and the averages behind
those players and the beautiful thing about Calshi
that i didn't mention earlier you're not trading
against a sports book you're trading against other users
so you can get in on the action
and set the lines really before it actually
begins right now you can get in on Klay Thompson
to average 2.8 plus three pointers made per game
and again you can be the first one in on the
action so don't look at the 25 trade
to pay zero again you making that trade would actually
initiate it and set the lines as it continues again use
the link down in the description or
the pin comment to get in on the action get
that awesome promotion on Calshi but now let's get back
to it and break down Klay Thompson
who he is and why those shooting percentages and overall numbers
from the preseason should not scare you
or concern you to any degree the first reason being is yes
Klay Thompson is way past his glory days
when he was with the Golden State Warriors and arguably
he he was playing with the best shooter of all time
while being the second best shooter of all
time obviously Steph Curry is who I'm alluding
to Klay Thompson since leaving Golden State playing
with the Dallas Mavericks has not looked like
the same version that everyone grew up watching
or really got accustomed
to watching I should say last year he averaged just under 12 points per
game two rebounds in one and a half assist in 22 minutes of action
and the defensive numbers did
go down compared to the all-defensive years
that we saw year after year after year from
Klay Thompson, but the three-point shooting never went away.
If you look at the three-point numbers
and the actual percentage, he shot 38%, and if
you look at the year-by-year breakdown
of his three-point numbers, that was arguably
the worst shooting year he has had in his career
while still shooting 7.5 per game.
The guy has been anywhere from 42.5%
or 44% was his best year back in 2017 and 18 where
he was basically unstoppable playing off of Steph Curry.
38% was a down year
and that is still above league average by a decent credit, especially
behind the three-point line.
Overall, he didn't look great in the preseason for this Heat team,
but it is the preseason.
he's an experienced veteran
and it doesn't seem like any of his confidence has gone away
which leaves me to believe he's not going to shy away
from his three-point shot he's not going to
shy away and pass up open three-point opportunities
which means he's going to stay very aggressive
when he gets his opportunities to shoot the basketball
and he still is going to look something
like Klay Thompson again on October 3rd against
the Toronto Raptors he had zero points on zero
of two shooting one of them being
a three-point shot he added two rebounds five days later on
October 8th against the Pelicans five points on two
of seven shooting one of six from behind the
three point or excuse me one of six from behind
the three point line with three assists again six
days later six days later on the 14th
of October he had twelve points on five of 10 shooting best
shooting night by far in the preseason
but again two of seven from behind the three point line and
then finally two days later October 16th he goes oh
for seven including oh for six from behind the
three-point line with zero points Klay Thompson did
not look like himself but we got these answers
from him about really what is going on and what his overall feelings
and ideas are surrounding
this quote I've played this game a long a long enough
to know you're going to have great days
you're going to have bad days just do the work
and stay consistent and I'll shoot my career
averages and if he's shooting
his career averages he's going to be just fine and so is
Miami as they are going to have a surplus
of three-point shooting as Klay Thompson's average
through his long and illustrious career in the NBA
is 40.9 percent that is really really good
Erik Spoelstra went on to say this on media day what Klay's done
in this league I think should
be celebrated and respected in our locker room
which it is I absolutely love that Klay Thompson
is celebrated he's understood he everyone
understands what he's doing what he has done
and what the expectation is for him in this brand of basketball
and really now in this new era,
playing in Miami for the first time in his career
in what is going to be very different from what we've seen in the past.
Obviously, in Golden State, he had Kevin Durant for a span of years.
He had Steph Curry for all of the years in Golden State.
But now he's playing off of Giannis and Bam Adebayo
and a bunch of other really good three-point shooters
where he should absolutely feast.
Pat Riley went on to say this about Klay Thompson
and his overall expectations.
Klay is one of the most iconic players to ever suit up in the NBA,
a four-time battle-tested
world champion who will fit perfectly
into his role as an all-around player at both ends
of the court.
All-around player is a bit of a stretch,
but we know what he is going to bring on the offensive
end.
That is the ability to knock down three-point shots
at an absolute prolific rate that is
going to bolster this Miami Heat organization
and their overall abilities to get the job done.
Klay Thompson, last few quotes from him,
and this should give a lot of Heat fans a lot of confidence
and really a lot of expectations surrounding him.
Now, should I say he's going to average
eight three-pointers made a game?
Absolutely not, but he might shoot eight a game. He might attempt
eight per game, and he might shoot four of eight.
He might shoot three of eight, and that would be
just fine for this Heat team as there's going
to be nights where the dude flat out cannot
miss and he's going to knock down 8 to 10 three-pointers
and it's going to be a whirlwind
to attempt to guard and defend as everyone else
is going to demand a lot of attention
and Klay is going to go scorched earth
and he's going to be unstoppable to say the absolute
least from anywhere on the court,
especially behind the three-point line.
Klay, when he's brought in to this Heat organization,
he goes on to say, I want to be able to look
back one day and say, I gave it everything I had.
I love that. He's not going to shy away. He wants
to be a guy that's remembered in this association.
Despite the career he's had up to this point,
he doesn't want it to end.
He wants to be known for all of the different stages he had in his
NBA career. And something that I love to hear when,
and we broke it down when it originally
happened was this quote from Clay.
When he was first brought into the Miami Heat, he asked the
question when walking around the locker room
and walking around the weight room for this first time
walking through the heat facility he says what's
the miami heat single season three point makes
record i love that he wants to break these records he wants
to everyone to know i'm going after these
records and you damn well better understand i'm
the best guy to ever come in here shooting these
three point shots and i'm going
to make it abundantly clear as this season goes on and his
career in miami continues to go on i can't wait
to see him bounce back for this from this overall
really streaky and inconsistent start through
the preseason I'm glad it happened in the preseason
because the regular season's around the corner
and I still have a bunch of faith in Klay Thompson I
think all of you should as well
as Heat fans I know he's getting older he's not the defender
everyone expected but that three-point shot
is not going to go away despite his inability to
knock them down in the preseason do not do not get scared
do not get really nervous or just worried
about Klay Thompson the heat going out there
and wasting money wasting money in order to bring him
in he is going to look just fine in this organization
as it's constructed and he is going
to absolutely feast with how this team runs
and how it works with the opportunities that he's going
to get let me know down below what are your feelings
on Clay Thompson in this current situation
A not worried he'll find his career rhythm B concerned
because last season's efficiency
efficiency went down already just a little bit
but again it did go down compared to his overall
numbers or C the record chase is still realistic
if the volume is there let me know down below your
overall thoughts and opinions
and i will see you guys on the next episode of Heat Digest thank you
guys for watching
