AI GeneratedThis video discusses whether prospect Marcelo Meyer could be a \"dark horse\" candidate for the Boston Red Sox's starting second base position. While Meyer has shown impressive offensive performance during spring training, the speaker argues that his lack of experience at second base makes him an unlikely choice for the opening day starter.
Do we have a dark horse candidate
to be the starting second baseman for the Boston Red Sox?
I'm here to break down how Marcelo Meyer is now in the topic
of conversation and is getting in the limelight.
I'll break it all down on this episode of Red Sox Digest.

We do appreciate your love and support, so thank you guys for now.
let's get to it and break down how there might
be a dark a dark horse for second base now we've had
this conversation a bunch this spring about whether it's going
to be david hamilton von grisham as
well as possibly christian campbell the young prospect
but now as of late it seems like there
is another opportunity for another prospect
to end up being on the opening day roster now before
i break down his the quotes and all the all the numbers
and everything else i'm going to say i
think it's very unlikely that Meyer is going
to end up being the opening day starter at second
base for the Boston Red Sox
and the reason I say that is well actually there's a few the first one
is because we are still left-handed heavy if we bring up Meyer
and put him at second base the good
component about Christian Campbell one
of them I should say is the fact that he is another
right-handed bat yes he has struggled through
this point of spring no one can really argue
against that if you go off
of the numbers defensively obviously he has been above average
he's been good he hasn't made any errors in a decent amount of attempts
but now Meyer is getting
some of those attempts at second base
and again a lot of the social media world will say is going
crazy over as they assume that he has a legitimate chance
to have an opportunity to earn the second
base spot before the opening day actually occurs now I don't think
that's going to happen because
a few quotes we're going to cite during this episode
but again it seems like Meyer is very
new to the position of second base he's been working out at short
and at third really I won't
say exclusively but for the vast majority of the offseason
and during spring he does mention
in this quote that we're going to then highlight I guess we'll
do it now from Rob Bradford on
Twitter Marcelo Meyer said before the game
that he has very few reps on the backfield at second
base before being summoned to play there yesterday
and today listen to Meyer talk second base and
again he clicked there's a link there that will
be down in the description if you guys want to go
listen to it it's about a four minute interview between Bradford
and Meyer it's really really
good it's just him discussing how second base
is going how long he's been working on it if he even
has been working on it and really just what's
the feel what's the ideas going into these reps how do
you feel about possibly playing second base
and it's a really really good piece of information
shout out to Bradford for that as well as this tweet
that we're going to cite from Alex Cora as
again Bradford goes on to say Cora said
on Marseille Meyer playing second base today being
possible preview of season quote everybody has a shot
and the quote from Alex Cora this is huge
and again obviously Cora probably has his mind made up
of where he's going to go for second base
But if he sees something that he really doesn't want to turn away from,
it seems like he's giving Meyer the opportunity
to really make a definitive statement going into opening day.
Saying, hey, I'm the guy.
Like, if you look at the numbers through spring, Meyer has by far
and away been one of the best players through spring for the Red Sox.
And that might seem crazy because he's a 22-year-old kid.
And again, he's only in, what,
his third spring training, second spring training?
He's been a monster this spring.
There's no way around it.
he's batting over 300 he has not what nine hits
or excuse me 11 hits in 32 abs six runs one home
run in 10 rbis with no stolen bases
but again the idea is the same he has been a monster at the
plate he's batting at a very efficient efficient rate excuse me
and again defensively whether he's
at short whether he's at third whether he's
at second he's been pretty damn good now obviously
the reps do matter the amount of reps do matter
and because there isn't a whole lot of them
we can't say he's definitively going to be a great second baseman
or a great third baseman
if you will because a lot of the reps are coming at short
because that is his really his outright
position if you will the majority of the games played
this spring have been at short if you
notice the one darker gray column there
is again 10 games played at shortstop the row just above
it the four games at third
and then just above that you see the two games at second again not
really a lot of reps anywhere else outside third base
but again showing that he does have the
capabilities being up for the challenge
and again always willing to go out there and attempt to do
something at the highest level he claims
to be a high a very good athlete which obviously is
no surprise but again something that he does mention
in this really interview if you will
with rob bradford mentions he's a good athlete
and he's always willing to go out there and try
and put out his best effort and again if they want him
to play shortstop they want him to play third
if they want him to play second he's going to be willing
and he's going to be able to do any of
that now again what he does
also mention in this interview that it the reps matter he needs to get
more reps in like he took a few ground balls during
the december time he says at second base
But again, a lot of them, a lot of the time,
a lot of the reps he put in during this offseason
through spring were not at second base.
So if he looks to play second base,
he's going to need more and more reps in order to become
more comfortable and really get to just really
a stage where things are just muscle memory
and he's able to just act and perform at a high level.
So again, I, again, do not believe he's going to be our second baseman.
I believe that it's going to be a good chance
of seeing David Hamilton as well as Christian
Campbell.
Right now, Campbell is not playing all
that well through spring offensively, but again,
like we mentioned earlier, defensively,
he has been effective, and he has not made any
errors at second base at least,
and he does have good range for a second baseman, and
again, versatility is another key factor.
All of these guys that we're mentioning have such
a great ability to move all over the
diamond.
And Campbell, as we mentioned, second left field,
probably has the capabilities to put him in right as well.
And then for Meyer, he has the ability to play short as well as third.
And now he's unlocking second base,
and it seems like he's going to be just fine at doing so.
So when Alex Corr says everybody really has a shot, there's probably
a good idea that he has his mind made up to a certain degree.
But if Meyer comes out here and plays
and performs at a level that is undeniable,
it seems like he's going to be open and optimistic, we'll say,
when it comes to watching and breaking down these youngsters
and giving them more opportunity to go out there and obtain the reps
and prove that they do have the capabilities.
And it's not just the offensive swing of things,
but defensively, they can still carry their weight.
I'm really enjoying this.
This is not a bad problem to have a surplus of talent,
not only to put in your batting
lineup, but obviously to put into defensive positions
is going to be a massive, massive
plus.
Now we, and this is kind of off topic, kind of not, Trevor Story.
If Trevor Story finds himself injured
at any point of this year, and we see him on our
15, 25, 30, 60 day IELTS, then don't panic.
And the reason I say that is because we
are most likely going to lean on Meyer to come
up in play second or excuse me at shortstop for the Red Sox
and the reason being is because that
is his one definitive position that's where he's played really
the entirety of his career his
baseball career whether it be in spring
on the double ace league he has the ability to out there
and really get the job done
so don't panic have faith in these youngsters have faith in Alex Cora
and I think we are going to be just fine thank you guys for watching
and I'll see you guys on
on the next episode of Red Sox Podcast.
