AI GeneratedThe New York Yankees are exploring a trade for third baseman Matt Chapman from the San Francisco Giants to address a critical void at third base. While Chapman's contract and recent injury history present risks, he is viewed as a significant upgrade over Ryan McMahon. The Yankees may leverage their pitching depth to facilitate the deal and negotiate salary retention.
We have a major New York Yankees free agency update
to go over today as a new target has
been revealed for the Yankees as Brian Cashman will look
to change the infield around with
a lot of pitchers who the Yankees do have
as an option to move on from considering their
starting pitching rotation is already set
for next year between their four-star pitchers
and Ryan Weathers is also damn good.
The Yankees, they do have some starting pitchers
who do become expendable because of this.
And honestly, it will lead to them being able
to make moves for positions of need.
No position of need is bigger than third base as well.
Ryan McMahon has struggled.
The Yankees want to move on from him.
And also, second base is less of an issue
because between Luis Garcia Jr. and Anthony Volpe,
it's not a position that we're too worried about.
What I'm worried about is if you guys
would miss out on Yankees content.
So make sure to go ahead and subscribe to Yankees Digest

It is completely free.
We got videos and YouTube shorts coming out every single day,
breaking down all the latest New York Yankees news updates
and everything else on the channel
and guys here's the thing we look at the Yankees right now
and we look at what they need the most
and honestly I think we would all agree it's
a third baseman there's other positions they could
use they could use another catcher specifically
Ryan Jeffers in free agency they could definitely
use some more bullpen arms considering how many
free agents they have and just resigning theirs
but to me third base is the obvious answer right here
and now they've had a target who has come up
on their radar before and Matt Chapman
who has been made available as guys Matt Chapman trade
idea has tested the Yankees fit
and honestly it's the type of move that the Yankees should be
interested in but there's one caveat that we
are going to talk about today because it does really
change how much interest the New York Yankees should hold
in Matt Chapman but here we do see
it get discussed as it was mentioned by Joel Rutger
that Chapman is the one high-priced veteran
that the San Francisco Giants might be able to flip
and on top of that he's consistently been
a 4.0 bWAR excuse me player over
the last few years overall Chapman becomes someone who the
Yankees have an opportunity to make a trade
for because they do have the options that they do have
the guys that makes this move very much possible
and the Yankees infield right now their third
base base is a problem and right now their third baseman
is Ryan McMahon. McMahon has struggled a
bunch with the .213 batting average at .635 OPS this season
and also his fielding being down from what
it usually is there was not a lot of value that he
was bringing I mean technically zero based off
his WAR being a zero now McMahon did
not really play well enough to really have the Yankees even
consider him coming back to the team
and Matt Chapman obviously he's had better years his
batting average wasn't very good at a .235
and a .692 OPS is not good either he did have a 2.7 WAR
though and with this type of with these type
of stats there is a good chance that if the Yankees
are able to make a move
for instance trading someone like Clark Schmidt for him well they
probably wouldn't have to pay the entire contract
that just wouldn't have to happen and on top of
that though his contact has been terrible recently
the expected batting average is low the hard hit
percentage is low we do see is still one
of the best fielders at the third base position a very
good fielder who moves really well he does have
the potential to bounce back he's someone the
Yankees could kind of go for and depending
on the package they would not have to pay all this
contract we know the Giants have money
and they're willing to pay some so if the Yankees give him a
pitcher that's more valuable than what they currently have
for Matt Chapman's contract
there is a good chance the Yankees can kind of get
the Giants to hold off on giving the Yankees
that entire contract and the Giants would probably eat some of it
which does make for a much different
conversation now in this trade what we do see
is the Yankees giving Clark Schmidt and Kyle Carr
in a deal where Matt Chapman would go
to the Yankees it's the type of deal that look again
the Yankees they overall would definitely add
a lot of money to their team around 16 million
dollars but at the same time what it
also does is it gives them a real opportunity to have a third
baseman who they can trust
and I do think that is a very very big point on this right now is
the whole situation at hand where the Yankees really
do need someone to play this position
And Chapman, look, he's making $25 million through 2030.
Is it necessarily a good contract? No.
And that's what I mean.
There's a chance the Yankees would have to pay some of it,
probably the first two years.
But the second two years would likely go back
to the Giants in this deal.
And honestly, I think it's worth it for the Yankees,
based on the fact that there's very few options in the infield.
I mean, there's really not much that the Yankees can do externally
in free agency to add another infielder to the team.
The only option is Luis Arraez.
Arraez who obviously we will talk about he's
a second baseman we're not going to see him switch
to third because he just played super well at second base
and the Yankees will definitely look
into Arraez for sure but at the same time they'll look
at Chapman he's a great fielder who overall
kind of just fits the fact that the Yankees don't like
a batting average which honestly I don't
really love the idea of another low average hitter a guy
who struggles to get on base he would be
someone I'd want at the back end of the batting order
but he does solve the third base problem
for years he's a bridge gap guy
if the Yankees cannot bring in Terry Yukisato to the team
it's honestly not their worst option do I love it
am I going to sit here and go crazy over Matt
Chapman no but it is going to help the team
and that is something that we can't deny they would
be better off I mean New York would surrender some rotational value
and also Kyle Carr's
development upside but the pitching depth it does there's
a lot of it the Yankees do have so
there is that that they could look at and I think part
of the requirements for the deal would be
that he's recovering Chapman is recovering from core muscle
and hernia surgery and it's a full no
trade clause that would require his approval
and the expected recovery isn't a guarantee so you
have to check that salary retention before judging judging the price
and I think one of the things is
here if the Yankees take a flyer on a guy recovering
from a hernia surgery dealing with a
core muscle injury and he has a no trade clause
so he would tell the Giants yep I'm all right with
going to the Yankees I do think it's one
of those situations where the Yankees would certainly
certainly be able to go in there
and basically say we're not paying this full contract you're
taking half this money back whether it's we're paying 12.5 every year
for him or we're paying
25 the first two years for him
and then nothing the next two I think both of those are very real
options and I think it's the only way
a trade would ever get done for the Yankees to bring Chapman
in because that contract is not aging well
at the same time Chapman is better than Ryan McMahon in
every single sense of the word he's just
a better player he would have had more home runs that he
you know played a bit more but he was injured
and honestly at the same time we don't see anything
that McMahon did better not fielding not offensively
so even though yes and look I think
maybe they'll be able to get rid of McMahon
and I'm not saying it's the best option but it's one
of those that the Yankees will have to consider
because the other option is what throwing McMahon
out there for another year having McMahon
and Rosario again a move that did not work
this does give you an everyday third baseman
is it a great option well if he bounces back from
surgery actually he has played quite well in the past
so it's possible he's never been a great
contact hitter obviously the Yankees don't care about contact
and I want them to so I prefer them
to get someone who has good on base percentage
again Terry Uchisato to me is the guy the Yankees
should go all out for to also really get back
into the Japanese market we saw Joel Sherman say the
Yankees plan on doing that but guys I do want
to know what you think about this move so let me know
in the comments down below what you want to see comment
A if you do want to do the trade say yes
upgrade third base comment B if you only would
do it if salary gets retained or comment C if no
you'd rather protect the pitching you rather just wouldn't go out there
and do this type of deal it
just wouldn't make sense now again part
of the caveat here is as well would the Yankees ever put
would they ever put Anthony Volpe at third base
or even if they would bring back Jazz they put
him at third base sure
and is that a better option maybe we see the comment of the day today
mentioning right here that overall we saw Waters 20 mentioned
that I would like to see them bring
back Jazz on a two to three year deal he hit 19 home runs
and stole 40 bases in a down year he also
ranked 13th in batting average i think he's going
to have a bounce back year his personality
reminds me of Nick Swisher
and he put too much pressure on himself going for 50 going for the
50 50 season i don't hate the idea
of bringing Jazz back would he be locked at second base i
think it depends and i definitely don't think
so if Jazz is willing to play third base i could also
see the Yankees trying to bring him back
and move him around a little bit and see what works
if they do that maybe Volpe goes to third base
is that really an upgrade though only if Jazz
bounces back but at the same time
a Chapman trade you're asking for him to bounce back from an
injury so a lot to look at guys let me know
your thoughts in the comments down below like this
