in today's video we're going to explore
inverted
narcissism and inverted narcissism isn't
the same as covert
narcissism if you haven't heard of this
type of narcissism then please stay
tuned to find out
more hi everyone I'm Athena thank you so
much for stopping by today especially if
you're new here if you would like to

on the Subscribe button now what is
inverted narcissism and how does it
differ from covert narcissism firstly
it's important to make it clear that
inverted narcissism isn't actually an
official diagnosis which means it will
not be found in the DSM 5 inverted
narcissism is actually a term that was
initially coined by Sam fnan and it is a
combination of somebody who has covert
narcissism and codependency the inverted
narcissist depends exclusively on having
romantic relationships with other
narcissists they get off on this type of
relationship and they almost get their
own form of narcissistic Supply by being
in a relationship with a powerful
grandiose overt narcissist the inverted
narcissist and the grandio overt
narcissist are like two pieces of a
puzzle that fit perfectly together it's
important to differentiate that not all
covert narcissists are actually inverted
narcissists but all inverted narcissists
are actually covert they are very
self-centered sensitive vulnerable
defensive hostile and paranoid they are
very much everything that a covert
narcissist is is envious they enjoy
playing the victim they are passive
aggressive and because they have a very
fragile ego a very fragile self-esteem
that is why they latch onto
relationships with a very strong
dominant overt narcissis because this
connection helps them feel better about
themselves and it helps compensate for
their own inadequacies and their own low
self-esteem their self-image is
essentially enhanced by by being with
somebody who is an overt
narcissist now it's important to
differentiate that inverted narcissists
cannot be in relationships with normal
healthy individuals they can only be in
relationships with overt
narcissists and this is what
differentiates an inverted narcissist
from a covert
narcissist and also like I mentioned at
the beginning there is a very strong
element of codependent dependency they
have a lot of anxiety about being
abandoned they feel the need to be in
control in many ways whilst they're in
this relationship so they will play the
victim you know there will always be
some drama that they create and they
will desperately cling on to this
relationship with the overt narcissist
no matter how much abuse the overt
narcissist inflicts on them because it
is important for them to be with
somebody that's strong like this it's
important for them to be with someone
who is um self-centered and grandiose
because it boosts their own self-image
because it overcompensates for their own
inadequacies now this is a very
important part of an inverted narcissist
that differs from the covert narcissist
inverted narcissists generally feel
really empty and unhappy if they are in
a relationship with any other kind of
person other than a narcissist inverted
narcissists tend to have a lot of traits
that are seen in somebody with dependent
personality disorder now if you haven't
heard of dependent personality disorder
I think it would be useful to go through
the uh criteria that are found in the
DSM that would diagnose somebody with
having this kind of disorder now
somebody with dependent personality
disorder has a pervasive and excessive
need to be taken care of that leads to
submissive and clinging behavior and
fears of
separation and this Begins by early
adulthood and is present in a variety of
contexts as indicated by five of more of
the following number one they have
difficulty making everyday decisions
without an excessive amount of advice
and reassurance from others number two
they need others to assume
responsibility for most major areas of
their life number three they have
difficulty expressing disagreement with
others because of fear of loss of
support or approval number four they
have difficulty doing things on their
own because of a lack of self-confidence
and judgment or abilities number five
they go to excessive lengths to obtain
nurturance and support from others to
the point of volunteering to do things
that are really unpleasant number six
they feel uncomfortable or helpless when
they are alone alone because of
exaggerated fears of being able to take
care of themselves number seven they
urgently seek another relationship as a
source of care and support when a close
relationship ends and number eight they
are unrealistically preoccupied with
fears of being left to care for
themselves now an adverted narcissist
does usually have traits of dependent
personality disorder and in order to
have depend dependent personality they
need to have at least five or more of
the traits I just mentioned now
codependency of course is also a big
part of their personality because of
their fear of Abandonment because of
this insecurity of making decisions on
their own or relying on themselves they
need a very strong person to connect
with that is why they cling on to a
narcissist an overt narcissist because
in their eyes this person is an alpha
male this person isn't scared of getting
what they want they are powerful they
are strong they are grandiose they are
entitled they are everything that the
inverted narcissist aspires to be it is
literally a matter of life or death for
them because if they don't have this
kind of connection with someone they
will literally fall apart because
they'll have to face their own fragile
self-esteem now if you've had an
experience with someone who you may
think is an inverted narcissist then
please feel free to share this
experience in the comments below the
video that is all I had to say today
everyone thank you so much for listening
and for watching and I will see you very
very soon in my next video take care
bye-bye
