That Was Rough to Watch...
Oct 12, 2026
Well, that was not ideal.
The young guys, the backups,
they got plenty of time against the Celtics
and they played the Celtics starters
and it just ended up not necessarily going,
I think, how any of us wanted to have that one go.
The final score yesterday was Celtics
significantly more than 76ers.
What's going on, everybody?
Christian Pedersen back with another episode
of Sixers Digest, the show that's going to give you
a little bit of a post-game emotional recap.
I don't know how much you want to dive into the X's
and O's of this loss other than to say
that it got us plenty of time for guys like LeBron and
company to get out there
and the starting five was a crazy look I think in the grand scheme of
things compared to what any one
of us really I mean Jabari Walker was starting at center and
they had Mitchell Robinson
and so a six foot seven starting fourth string center versus a
seven-foot defending NBA champion it went as well
as the as the scoreboard shows you but at the same
time I think there was some really interesting key takeaways
to get into all of this so what do
you say we dive into that on this episode
as always if you want to like subscribe comment
share follow love hearing from you guys on all
of this stuff this was game three of four in the
preseason the first of two against
the Celtics like I said Paul George started the Celtics started
of their main guys we did not so it felt
a little bit tactical to not be like oh here's the Jalen
Brown revenge game let's spend all our bullets
on that and instead Nick Nurse was feeling some
things out he saw a lot more Dean Wade Jabari Walker LeBron Filan
and a lot of guys who I think
were trying to assess what we really have in the lower down depths
who's going to maybe get that
last two-way contract those were the kind
of battles that we were fighting on this one and
thankfully uh that's why you do the pre-season
and you don't have to do this in the middle of
the regular season and before we go any further gotta check
in on thankfully our Calshi odds have
not changed at all this one did not hurt us that badly
and a reminder to everybody thank you to
Calshi for sponsoring this channel if you would like
to use the code digest nba and the code we
have for you when you're signing up Calshi will hook you up with 55
when you trade your first 25
dollars in options like i said the starting five
was a crazy look in the grand scheme of things we
will most likely never have Justin Edwards, Dean Wade
Jabari Walker, VJ Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey out
there as a starting group Justin Edwards getting 31 minutes it
was that kind of a game it was also
though a game in all of that where i think you had some guys i mean
this is a look that we might
give when we are up 30 on some stuff
and so you had to see how do some of these guys respond to
minutes that were not garbage um just pickup minutes
this was instead how do you have some
of these guys respond to getting hit in the face a little bit
and going toe-to-toe with some big
guys the overall of the night fantastic shooting
not fantastic three-pointer not fantastic three
free throw it was generally one of those nights where i guess
this is a live by the offense die
by the offense and on nights where we
are not going all gas no breaks things weren't working
out incredibly well the points off of turnovers
and i think the fast break points still a highlight
for me so if i'm trying to do the what were some
of the good takeaways the tempo with this team
is still there and having vj out for as much as we did
and having dean wade out there and having
the tempo maintain and having LeBron
and having the tempo maintain and having all the different
little odds and ends of pieces of saint thomas
and etc you know mix and match whoever you want
to mix and match with but having the again like
a little bit of a broken record but having this
group of guys of dylan jones jameer nelson caleb
love uh ryan repair getting 20 plus minutes having
all of that and still maintaining good tempo to me
was the main takeaway of looking at all of this
and being like okay you know if you're gonna lose
a pre-season game fine don't just have it be
aimlessly wandering around out there just being like okay we got
to kill time and sit back on our
laurels and be like okay well we didn't play we
didn't play Jalen Brown we didn't play Joel Embiid
we didn't play uh LeBron James
so you know whatever have it be something where okay if
we're going to take a loss like this let's still have it
be one where it's like what are the key
positive takeaways how do we grow this group how does
this all get better even through some of
this adversity if you want to call it i'll put it in air quotes
because this was if if this was
really adversity this would have been like
this if the Celtics in the regular season beat us with
our best out there and their best out there
and we lose by 30 then yes that is adversity that this
team has to go through right now
this was one where it's growing pains of like i said having
Jamir Nelson start at center against Mitchell Robinson
is a that's a tall task literally and
figuratively for our interior presence to go through
but on some of the post-game takeaway
we had i thought still some interesting stuff
to have uh be discussed about and this one was a
quote from Nick Nurse about Dean Wade just saying
he's super solid guy really smart um there's
things that you notice when you're with him every day
that you didn't know he was good at
because you only see him a couple times
a year some things like that now you see him on a daily
basis but he's been really really good dean wade
was part of the action galore last night and i
think if we've got those we've got those backup backup pieces
because it's clear that dean wade's
not going to be a starter
but if the backup pieces right now that we have are the baron
and dean wade justin edwards having himself
a little bit of a coming out party and Caleb Love
is looking good and we got to get Anthony Simons healthy
but he'll be part of that rotation this
is going to be something where there there's
not gonna be that steep of a drop off from our
alleged like super team starting five to the guys on the bench
and i think that yeah you you're
gonna almost have like parallel plot lines this year
of watching the how quickly can the superstars
merge their talents and make this all work
but also how quickly can we cycle in that bench and
how you know how not like short of a leash is Nick Nurse's gonna have
but how quickly is Nick Nurse
gonna dip into the bench and just be like look i like it
when this guy's out there i like it when
that guy's out there i like it
when we have you know some of the smaller tempo tempo tempo tempo
kind of lineups and it's all this is all really good headspace
for our guys to be in speaking of
pace and and whatnot this was a quote
from Tyrese Maxey talking about LeBron filling plays with an
unbelievably great pace just been telling him like pick
your spots man us as smaller guards have to
find the way to get in the paint not let
the defense completely collapse on him get there in
time so again talking about speed and pace
and pace and speed and pace and as much as that is
like oh my god i'm saying the words pace 200 times
in this episode in a short amount of time
to actually have some of that on tape now where
it's you know 25 minutes or so of LeBron filling
against the Celtics and him i did a video
on him earlier this week saying i think you know he's
looking like he's kind of low-key ready already
for the NBA speed of the game and if he's a guy
that has Tyrese Maxey turning heads
and being like oh dude dude's got some speed it feels like to me
the takeaway from this loss was yeah that was not necessarily
a blast to watch and i hope that there
are not a ton of those throughout the regular season
but that our guys are our guys are fighting
out there our backups are very fast
our backups have some really good chemistry and some gel
and some vibe to them
and some sizzle whatever the verb is that you want to put in there that
i think they can kind of cook a little bit
and that if that if there's going to be a takeaway
in the positive my positive would be that the pace had maintained
and so i think that we've
got some pieces that went out there and showed hey
when this is all actually going together
that things are going to fit together nicely and not be a,
hey, there's this group up here and then there's this group down here
and there's kind of nothing in between to make it all work.
So that's what I got for you today.
