Have you ever cleaned out your closet, you felt amazing about all that newfound space,
and then just a few months later realized you've filled it right back up again with
all the same kinds of things?
If that sounds familiar, you are not alone.
Shopping mistakes are easy to make, especially with all the trends, the sales, and the impulse
buys tempting us at every turn.
But today I'm going to help you break that cycle.
In this video, we're covering the five biggest wardrobe mistakes that waste your money and
Mistake number one, buying on impulse without a plan.
Impulse shopping is one of the fastest ways to add clutter to your closet with things
you'll regret later.
Maybe you're out running errands, you see a sale, and suddenly you've convinced yourself
that you absolutely need that trendy blouse, even though you have no idea what you'll wear
it with.
The problem here is without a plan, you'll end up with pieces that don't fit your wardrobe
or your lifestyle.
Instead, stick to a shopping list.
Before you buy anything new, ask yourself these questions.
Does it fit my lifestyle?
Does it complement at least three things in my existing wardrobe?
And do I absolutely love it?
If you can't say yes to all three of these questions, put it back.
And if you're unsure, wait a week.
If you're still thinking about it, maybe it's worth considering.
One strategy I love is called the pause method.
And it's when you feel the urge to buy something, put it in your cart or leave it in the store
and set a reminder to revisit it again in 24 to 48 hours.
If the excitement has faded, maybe it wasn't meant to be.
And it ends up being a lot easier to let that item go than to buy it, regret it, have it
hanging in your wardrobe, or to keep running back and forth to the store to return items.
Mistake number two is falling for fast fashion trends.
You know, trends come and go faster than ever.
And it's very easy to get caught up in the excitement.
But too often, those trendy pieces only get worn once or twice before getting pushed to
the back of the closet.
That's because they don't always fit your personal style or work with your existing
wardrobe.
Instead of buying into every trend, focus on timeless pieces that make you feel great.
And if you do want to add a trend, go for something subtle, maybe a trendy color in
a classic silhouette or a fun accessory that won't take over your whole look.
That way you can stay current without sacrificing your personal style.
A good rule of thumb is the three-year test.
Ask yourself if you would still love this item and wear it in three years.
If the answer is no, it's likely not a wise investment.
Another trick is to check what's trending, but only adopt the pieces that feel authentic
to your style, like incorporating a modern print into a silhouette that you already love
to wear.
Mistake number three is ignoring comfort and fit.
We've all been there, standing in front of the mirror in the dressing room, looking at
a piece that's a little too tight or too long or a little bit too fussy, but you buy
it anyway thinking you'll make it work.
Spoiler alert, you probably won't.
If a piece doesn't fit or feel good, the moment you put it on, you'll oftentimes take it right
off and never wear it when you get it home.
So it's probably not worth purchasing.
Instead, shop for fit, not for size.
Don't get hung up on the number on the tag.
Focus on how the clothing feels on your body.
And I like to take a few minutes to sit, walk, and even move around when I'm trying things
on.
If it doesn't pass the all-day comfort test, leave it behind.
Another trick I have for you is the mirror test.
If you find yourself constantly adjusting the item in the fitting room, tugging, pulling,
or smoothing it out, it's probably not the right fit for you.
Clothes should actually feel effortless, comfortable, and make you feel confident, not fussy.
Mistake number four, buying the same mistakes over and over.
Do you ever open your closet and realize you have 10 black tops, five pairs of jeans
in the same wash, and a whole section of things you never actually wear?
That's because it's easy to fall into shopping patterns.
We buy what's familiar, what feels safe, and sometimes what we think we should own, even
if we never wear it.
This year, before buying anything new, do a quick closet audit.
Ask yourself, what do I actually wear the most?
What pieces have I bought but never worn?
And what do I keep buying over and over?
Then use that information to make smarter choices.
Maybe you don't need another black top, but you do need a pair of shoes that actually
work with your wardrobe.
A great way to prevent this is by keeping a fashion journal for a month.
Write down what you actually wear every day and review it.
You can even take a photo of your outfit each day and keep an album in your phone of your
outfits.
You'll start to see patterns and gaps that will help guide your future purchases.
Mistake number five is shopping for a fantasy lifestyle.
This is a big one.
So many of us buy clothes for the life we wish we had, not the one we actually live.
Maybe you pick a bunch of dressy outfits, thinking you'll start going to more events.
Or you buy activewear, even though you never wear workout clothes outside of the house.
Those pieces just sit there, taking up space.
Before buying anything, ask yourself, where would I actually wear this?
Does this fit my daily life?
And if not, rethink the purchase.
Instead, focus on versatile pieces that can transition between the different parts of
your life.
Something you can dress up or down, wear casually, or for an event.
A trick to help this is the calendar check.
Look at your actual schedule and see where your clothing gaps are.
If your closet is filled with fancy outfits, but your life is 90% casual, then it tells
you where your real shopping needs should be.
Shopping Smarter isn't about buying anything new.
It's about making choices that really serve your wardrobe and your lifestyle.
Next time you shop, use the three-question rule.
Will I wear it at least three different ways?
Does it fit my lifestyle?
And do I truly love it?
Remember, if the answer isn't a resounding yes on all three, skip it.
Now I'd love to hear from you.
