Do you have too many clothes in your closet, but somehow you still feel like you have nothing to wear?
If your morning starts with frustration, outfit changes, or that sinking feeling when you open
your closet, you are not alone. And today we're going to fix it. I'm going to walk you through
how to figure out if you have too many clothes, what to do about it, and how to create a wardrobe
that works for your life in 2025. And no, you don't need to throw everything away or become
a minimalist. But you do need to be honest about what is actually working for you and what's just
taking up space. Do you have too many clothes? Let's start with the truth. We're living in a
fast fashion world. Clothes are easy to buy, affordable, and tempting, which means most of us
are drowning in options we never wear. Let me share some quick research. In a study by ClosetMaid,
they found that 21% of the average woman's wardrobe is unwearable. 12% has never been worn,
not even once. 10% of women feel depressed whenever they open their closet. And 44% can't find
something at least once a month. And a third of us are holding on to clothes that are either too
tight or too loose. Does this sound familiar? Here's the real question though. Is your closet
working for you? Because it's not about how many clothes you have. It's about how useful and
wearable they are. So I want you to start by asking yourself these questions. Do you say,
I have nothing to wear at least once a week? Do you try on at least three outfits before choosing
one? Do your clothes actually fit your current body and life? Do you buy pieces you wish you
could wear, but you don't? Are you saving clothes for when you lose weight or go back to an old job
or just in case? If you answered yes to even one of these questions, it's time for a closet reset.
Why most closets don't work. So let's talk about why so many of us feel stuck when it comes to our
wardrobe. It's not because we don't have enough clothes. It's because we don't have the right
clothes. And here's what I mean. Our lives change, our bodies change, our routines change, but our
closets, they usually don't. We end up holding onto things from our past life or our past body
and those clothes stop making sense for the woman we are today. Whether you retired, changed jobs,
shifted from work to home life, or your lifestyle just looks different than it did from five or
ten years ago, your wardrobe needs to evolve with you. And let's talk about Pareto's principle. I
love this. It's also called the 80-20 rule and you might have heard me talk about it before.
The principle actually means that we wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time, which means 80%
of your closet is just clutter. It's visual noise and it's stuff that makes getting dressed harder,
not easier. Imagine if you looked in your closet and you saw only the good stuff, the clothes that
you love to wear. Getting dressed would be so much easier and faster. You'd know exactly what works
and you'd be able to spot the missing pieces that would actually pull everything together. So let's
do the three-step closet reset. Now let's talk about how to fix those problems. Step one, we're
going to purge with a purpose. I want you to look at every item in your closet and ask this question.
Does it fit my body, my lifestyle, or my personal style today? If the answer is no, it needs to go.
Here's what to remove. Clothes that are too tight or too loose or just don't fit right now. Anything
that doesn't fit your current lifestyle, work clothes if you're retired, fancy dresses if you
haven't touched them in years. You know what I mean. Clothes you don't feel good in, even if you've
spent a lot of money on them. Items that are stained, ripped, killed, or just worn out. Sentimental
pieces that you never wear. And yes, that includes your prom dress and your first date outfit. Anything
you haven't worn in over a year. And this is where most women stop. And I get it, it feels
counterintuitive to get rid of clothes when you feel like you don't have enough. But trust me,
clearing space makes room for the clothes you do need. And so that you can actually see the clothes
you love to wear. Step two, we're going to organize by classification. This part is so simple but
really powerful. Organize your closet by category. All the tops together, all the bottoms together,
dresses together, jackets, etc. Then within each category, arrange them by color from light to dark.
And here's why this works. You'll actually be able to see your wardrobe more clearly and you'll be
able to instantly get outfit ideas just by glancing at your options. It'll help you stop forgetting
about that one top you really love because it's buried behind a bulky tote. It also helps you
mix and match much more easily. So your clothes are going to start working harder for you. Next,
we're heading to the store. Step three, we're going to shop with intention. Now this is the
little secret that ties everything together. I want you to start a running note on your phone
or keep a little notepad in your closet. And every time you put on an outfit and think,
this would be perfect if I had... and fill in the blank. And that's the item you're going to
write down. It could be a layering tee, a better pair of jeans, or a great neutral sweater. Anything
that would help your current wardrobe make more sense. So the next time you're shopping, you're
not guessing. You're not impulse buying. You're building a wardrobe that fills in the gaps and
you're doing it on purpose. And that's how you stop buying more and start building a better wardrobe.
What a functional closet looks like. So what does it look like when your closet
is working for you? You'll open it in the morning and know exactly what to wear. Everything fits
your body and your life right now. You get dressed in under five minutes. The clothes feel good and
you feel good in them. You're not drowning in stuff that makes you feel bad. And the best part,
you actually get compliments when you walk out the door. And this is what I want for you in 2025.
