Multiple Sixers Updates...
Oct 3, 2026
We got some Sixers updates, injury news, Nick Nurse quotes.
He's in his bag, according to him.
His words directly.
We'll get into all of that and more on this episode of Sixers Digest.
What's going on everybody?
Christian Pedersen back with another episode of the show where Sean and I
bring you guys daily content updates.
Right now, training camp is bringing us a lot of quotes, so we
got to get straight into it.
As always though, at the beginning of the show, I got to tell you to like,
subscribe, comment, share, follow, all those other YouTubey buttons.
The first one being an injury update in the taco fall has a hip strain and
he will be reevaluated in two weeks.
This is maybe, um, not a disastrous, like, oh my God, the season is over
kind of injury, but with a dumb bone already having a foot sprain and now
taco fall and it's just like, you know, you got to make sure that you don't
have death by a thousand paper cuts.
And when we have a lot of our backup bigs already being somewhat bumps and
bruises at this point in like the very beginning of the season, to me, it's
at the very least kind of just worth paying attention to because as much as
we are a top heavy, I would say we're not even a top heavy team, maybe it's
the point is we have a bunch of superstars, but we also have a potentially
really well-rounded rest of the roster.
And taco fall maybe was in running for being one of those two way contracts
could have been a nice, just little backup card to have if nothing else was,
I think just a curiosity for all of us.
So a little bit of a bummer to see him getting injured.
His injury, however, has not affected our chances on the calcium
market of being the NBA champions.
We are still currently sitting at 10%.
And as always, we've got to say a quick thank you to calcium for being a
sponsor of this channel and reminder to everybody out there.
If you would like to try calcium, you can use the code digest NBA and the link
that we have to sign up and they will hook you up with $55 when you trade
your first $25 in options.
Okay.
The main chunk of what I want to talk about today is the defensive issues
that even with our big men, taco fall and a Dem boner hurt, Nick nurse gave
an interesting quote talking about the defensive concepts for this team.
And I, you know, it is no, to me, there was two main or two and a half main plot
lines against us all season, all off season.
It was, how's the chemistry going to work?
Will it be stay healthy?
That's where I'm like, that's a half plot line, whatever.
That's just going to be a thing about it.
Be no matter where he goes.
And number three being this team just doesn't have defense.
This team has a bunch of scoring, a bunch of scoring, and what
are they going to do on defense?
Too many steals, too much aggression.
I get a lot of people just, and my counter to all of that was, well,
we haven't seen this in action.
And I want to see what Nick nurse can actually cook up.
So he's got some interesting quotes, um, talking about this in this article.
And, uh, as we go back to make a little boo-boo on the OBS board, apologies
about that love looking at coach what's happening, coach, let's pull this up here.
Recently, I don't feel like I've been able to get in my bag of
defensive stuff nearly as much as I would like to be told
reporters after camp on Wednesday.
Um, I think now we've got a little bit more depth size athleticism
and it may take us a minute.
But I think I'm most excited about that.
That is, is really interesting to me of him being directly excited.
I think we have the capabilities to understand it, execute it, do it on the
fly, do multiple things, even if it's once or twice, get back to normal
and that kind of stuff that would probably be the biggest change when
talking between last year's team to this year's team and so Nick nurse.
It's that in his bag mentality of, if you look at his career numbers of when he
was in Toronto and where their defensive rankings were, he initially was cooking
up some really good top five kind of defenses and that's a way long time
ago and way different rosters.
And so maybe a complete non sequitur, but I think that it provides to me at
least the context that he does have the rudimentary concepts and at least some
resume on how to run a really good elite level defense.
And so if he's saying to reporters, look, I, I just haven't been able to
do what I wanted to do and get after it the way that I want to get after it
with the pieces that I have had to work with in the last couple of years,
versus now I've got speed, I've got size, I've got athleticism.
I've got the ability to do some different things, to try some stuff, to
get, you know, do a little of this, get a little bit of that.
I have to at least be optimistic about it.
Again, we're going to see this all come together.
And like he also said, though, it's going to take some trial and error and
it's going to take a little bit of time, but I think to me that really speaks
volumes to love trying to dissect coach because it's sometimes shades of gray
and it's never really direct, but if he, you know, short of him saying, well,
here's my, we're going to run the one, three, one, and this guy's going to be
here and actually drawing it up on a whiteboard for everybody to say, though,
that he has some stuff in mind and he has some ideas and has some concepts.
I think that that means that we're going to see some different execution early on,
but I would also hope that that means we have the kind of pieces with nurse
combined with LeBron combined with Mike Gansey, some of the other veteran
leadership and B et cetera, that they can absorb that, assess it and make the
actual changes and then, you know, by call it 15 games into the season, have
a little bit more cohesive and dynamic defensive strategy and plan figured out.
Now you can always go out.
Once we talked a bunch about the apron and when they're going to be able to
make another move or two, and they can go out in December ish and get some
degree of vet minimum trades and wave people like you can always do drastic
stuff like that, but if Nick nurse saying that he's got a plan, my default is I
want to trust him and I want to assume that that plan let's, let's have faith
in that plan until we actually see the evidence of it not working.
Just my thoughts, a couple more quotes from Nick nurse before we say
adios on this episode, talking about some of the other guys and how they've
been doing at camp KCP has been doing great.
It's been interesting to have him.
I always say that you never know these guys until you have them.
And he's just a really good player.
You can tell me smart.
He knows what he's doing, plays both ends, make the open shot.
It's great to see.
I think Dean said yesterday, Dean just kind of played really well, really
hard and kick it out to a wide open.
He's going to take it, which is perfect.
Right?
So the KCP again, talking about both ends, talking about, you know, we, we
all collectively saw, okay, uh, KCP is a bucket, dude's a shooter, dude's
a additional offensive option.
But if he's part of the defensive scheme, if Dean Wade's part of the
defensive scheme, that just feel like Nick nurse is directly talking about
how some of these guys are really stepping up in the right kind of way.
Uh, who else do you want to talk about?
I mean, Huck has been athletic long plays really hard.
He's been awesome to see.
And I, like I said yesterday, filing is really competing, which is great to see.
Maybe these are the most generic bland base level of quotes.
But again, I don't think Nick nurse is under any generic obligated or any
general obligation to be out there and blow smoke up these guys' asses.
I, he, this is not youth sports participation trophy.
This is the NBA.
If nurse was thinking that any of these guys were not doing well, I
think we just wouldn't hear about them.
So to see that Portie's having himself a nice start to camp, even if he's, you
know, third down on that list of levels of importance defensively, it to me
overall just really feels like there is something, something kind of nice
cooking right now where, um, the, the Sixers and what they're doing on defense.
I just, I'm really, I'm really excited to close this out all with a Joel Embiid
quote, we have not heard a ton from him this off season and especially his
availability camp wise has been limited to the media.
Um, but he's talking here about MP or talking about LeBron and talking
about the comments that LeBron said about wanting to come here.
Uh, you know, says things about him being the greatest and
whatever, yada, yada, yada.
I want to jump down to the second part where he goes, I'm at the point in my
career where I just want, I need to win.
The need to win.
I think that a big thing for me all season is going to be the, what role, the
chemistry thing and what roles do all these guys to play.
And I think if Embiid is at the point where he, he needs it, he feels it in
his bones in a, in a medically safe way, uh, that's not going to break any of
those bones, but I would be curious if that manifests in a more aggressive
and be trying to get out there and do a ton, or if that manifests itself in a
more reserved and be who understands the greater picture right now of needing to
stay healthy, optimize the defense and figure out how the team can win without
him and just to help in a, in a way that is not necessarily putting the literal
team on his shoulders and carrying it, but trying to figure out how to fit
into the bigger pieces of this puzzle.
Let me know what you think on all of this.
