LEAKING POP TOP CAMPERVAN ROOF | Citroen Relay Van Conversion - Family Van Life Ep. 13

In just two weeks time we're going to be moving into our van to embrace full-time van life traveling around Europe with our three kids. Join us this week as Richard officially gains his unemployed status, we get interviewed by BBC Radio Cumbria and our wonderful pop-top edition turns into a big problem when water starts seeping into the van. Right guys so we are about to do something which is very different for us, very exciting, we have got a news reporter from BBC Radio Cumbria coming out to our house to have a look at the van, chat to us about our story, where we're going, what our plans are and why we're doing it. They did want us to show them what we're working on on the van as well so they wanted to see what we were doing but our tape measure has gone missing. Richard is that you looking for it We've looked everywhere and we can't find this tape measure so we've got like five minutes to maybe find it before they turn up. We didn't find the tape measure but enjoyed the excitement of taking part in our first ever radio interview. Eight minutes past eight now I have something truly amazing to tell you about Good morning everyone so it is Tuesday the 21st which means it's the first day I'm actually unemployed so I know what you're thinking still got a lot of the van to finish off still got all of this build of wires hanging down shelves not up ceiling not up we've got all that to do in just under two weeks and instead of doing that I brought myself to Ullswater to do a bit of kayaking just have a look at that how beautiful is that just 40 minutes down the road so I'll have a little paddle and then I'll get back for lunch and how's that guys look at this got the lake to myself it's about nine o'clock in the morning not in school holidays so it can actually be quite peaceful up here and look at that absolutely stunning bit of overcast but I ain't gonna complain about that it's quite smooth and what we're gonna do is we're just gonna head over to that beach over there and I've even taken a banana for a snack so we'll go over there sit down and might even get the drone out I'm not brave enough to get the drone out whilst kayaking not just yet okay so whilst the pretty much the rest of the UK were enjoying a heat wave yesterday up here in Cumbria we had a day full of heavy rain so it's just typical is the wettest place in the UK so it's to be expected but we're just coming the van today and I was actually putting Teddy's mattress just uh just up here because it was a bit too big so I was figuring out how much I needed to cut off so I rested it in the shower bit here just while I was getting it down sorting myself out whatever um and then when I went inside to cut it I noticed it was a little bit wet and I thought oh maybe the kids have just dribbled on it or something didn't think any thing of it too much but just came back in the van and took a look down in the shower tray and we have puddles and splashes of water in here um which can only mean one thing that we've got ourselves a leak uh so yeah obviously the pop top's been installed and you've got these little little bits up here these little brackets and all these little whatever they're called in the ceiling so something's obviously leaking um it's not great not great at all so we need to figure out where that leak's coming from so I think what we're going to do maybe not today hold on let me sprain box not today but tomorrow I think we're going to get a hose on the roof one of us do that one of us inside and we're going to see how the water's getting in so today is test day as Kira said we have water coming into our shower tray and that was never there previously so it's obviously coming from the pop top or the kids have come in with a juice bottle or something and just spilled water but uh I think that's probably highly unlikely oh hang on yes coming now I can find this bolt just started yeah so we've got the wet patch up here in the pop top and then as we come down here along the side which is like above the bit that's leaking down there then you you know you're putting your fingers there and it's wet it's wet all along the back here so all down this side which is not great so we took the van back to have its pop top fixed on Wednesday they've basically resealed the whole unit for us um so effectively that should have done the trick but yesterday we had more heavy rainfall Richard just came out in the evening just to check it as you as you do and we've noticed another leak so it is still leaking so today we're just out here first thing this morning and Rich is just going to see like how wet it is up in the actual pop top when it's up because we didn't open that bit when it was raining last night so now we're just on more investigations and seeing what what the actual problem is so we could really do without this we've got like two weeks to finish the van and we're not being able to crack on with any of it there we are guys so it's still it's not funny it's still leaking um yeah and worse worse than it was before because now we spotted it on this side having the pop top up um which is where we would be sleeping um so if we hadn't spotted this now we might have spotted it one morning wherever we are Denmark Norway where it's been raining and started getting wet heads while we were asleep um not good I think Richard's gonna have a cup of tea and then I think he's gonna get on the phone to the pop top company and we'll see where we go from there I mean it must be fixable but we're just losing more days on the round build and we don't have that that many days to get this done so where are we off to now back down uh Lakeland Leisure in Kendal so this is the third time we're heading down uh obviously got fitted we found leaks sent it back they resealed everything but there's still leaks so they uh there's more leaks there's more leaks yeah there's leaks we didn't even know about so they've obviously taken stuff out to reseal it and then put it back without resealing it and uh new things now leak so very interesting yeah but they are dealing with it which is they are so far so good they're taking the responsibility and they're going to be checking it over again for us so hopefully this time it will be it because we don't want to waste any more time we have a very tight time sale so with time slipping away we decided not to sit anxiously twiddling our thumbs and instead we switched our focus to the house packing up boxes taking down furniture and putting it in our storage unit don't forget to tune in next week for the last vlog of our journey
