Hey guys and welcome back to our channel. This week our road trip through Norway continues as
we enjoy some epic family van life moments. We drive through the world's longest tunnel,
spot porpoise swimming in the wild and hike up to a glacier.
It's been an amazing week guys so come with us to see what we've been up to.
We start this week off with our least glamorous park up yet, an IKEA car park,
for all with good reason because from here you can catch the free shuttle bus into central Bergen.
So we arrived in the city and went straight up to the funicular
that takes you right to the top of Mount Floyen.
So just five minutes from the funicular station you get to this lovely lake
and between 11 and 4 you can hire a Canadian canoe for free, no charge,
with life jackets and all. They fit about three people and it is fantastic.
It was great to be up here letting the kids run wild. There are a few play areas up here too,
as well as some resident goats which Teddy really enjoyed petting.
So we've just managed to escape the crowds. There seems to be a steamboat show going
along the main strip there so now we're just exploring historic Bergen.
It's absolutely beautiful. It's just all these wooden buildings and really really pretty.
There's obviously all the touristy shops but it's nice to just breathe a bit from the crowds.
It's very busy today.
So we have no plan for today. Norway has just been just a case of
drive really and see where you go. We've got a few places we want to sort of
see on the map. Other than that we just drive and find somewhere to stop for the night.
So as you can probably see Richard's up there in the pop top,
Jack's passing him the bedding and stuff like that so we get all the bedding down.
That all sits on top of Ted's bed during the day so we can get the pop top down and hit the road.
Okay so the tunnels. Do you know how many tunnels we've gone through?
No.
Okay Jack what was your guess?
I don't know.
What was your number?
152 was your number.
We have gone through 158 so the nearest person and the winner of the competition
who wins some money one note and one coin is Jack. There's your money.
Well done Jack.
You win 60 kroner.
So Jack was straight into the shop to spend his money on some sweets
whilst Richard had a shower in the van before we refilled the tank with some fresh water.
There we are so this is our really novel design
to fill up our van when it's raining and keep our bed dry.
Umbrella up there.
It's doing the job.
Right so now that we have a clear winner and we know that there are a lot more tunnels to come
we're going to have a re-wager on how many tunnels we're going to drive through.
So what was Piper's guess? New guess dad.
Piper your guess was 270 wasn't it?
278.
278 for Piper.
Jack what was your guess?
Jack's still thinking.
Dad what are you going for?
I'm gonna go with 310.
310.
Oh I don't know what to go for.
I'm gonna go with 310.
So yeah I think there's gonna be a section where we're gonna have less tunnels.
There is.
So I'm gonna go for 298.
That is my guess.
Oh that's so close to Piper.
That is my guess right.
We'll find out what Jack's is as well.
So the new bets are in.
Make sure you stay tuned for the coming videos to see who wins this time round.
It's £5 for the winner.
So we are now driving through the world's longest road tunnel.
It's called the Laerdal Tunnel and it is how long is it?
It's 24 and a half kilometres long.
So you spend 20 minutes or just over 20 minutes driving inside this tunnel.
That's insane.
And supposedly there's a nice bit in the middle where you can stop and it's all lit up.
So that'll probably be the only exciting part of this drive won't it?
It probably will be.
It's not overly exciting.
See last time we came out here we went over the top of this mountain
which takes you to the Stegerstein viewpoint.
Crazy hairpin bends as well.
It's a crazy crazy road.
If we can find the clip we'll put a clip in because I had to reverse
our seven and a half metre long motorhome back down this mountain pass with no barriers.
Yeah so it's pretty hairy up there.
I didn't really want to do it again to be honest.
Earlier this year we got the van stuck on some ice in the Lake District
and I think that's just put me off doing some of these crazy crazy roads.
It's a good job we're taking this tunnel today.
The weather is not that great.
The cloud cover is just covering that viewpoint.
So we're not going up there we're going down here
and I actually think I see some purple lights in the distance.
So maybe we'll see in the first little bit but we're only five kilometres in.
So we've just arrived at our park for the night and hopefully two nights
because it is super super beautiful.
Technically it's just a layby off the main road here
but it's right on a fjord, Sognefjord to be exact.
So it's absolutely stunning.
It's five o'clock now so I'm going to cook dinner
and then hopefully tomorrow we can just have a nice chilled out day.
Right so we've bought these things called smash
because someone on YouTube has recommended them.
And I doubt that, I reckon Kira just picked them up.
She liked the look of them and she just picked them up.
They do look good and I think they're salty.
I think it's some sort of chocolate salty milk.
There's only one way to do it isn't there, let's have a look.
Oh they don't look as good as that on the picture.
Do they not show us?
Oh, different, interesting.
I'm going to fall.
Wait there Jack.
Awful, awful.
That's the weirdest one I've ever tried.
They're okay.
Yeah.
Come on.
It's good.
Teddy want one.
I want that one.
That one?
No.
You pick.
This one.
Right, mummy has one.
My turn.
What do you think?
They're nice but like really different.
That saltiness, I've not had anything like that before.
Chocolate and salt.
It's not a bad combo.
It works.
If they filled the cone up with caramel.
Caramel and salt caramel.
They'd be on to a winner.
Yeah I like it.
What do you think?
I think they're gonna get eaten.
After dinner we all enjoyed a bit of cake for Grandma Angel's birthday.
Every year on this day we buy a birthday cake to remember Richard's mum
who sadly passed away before Piper was born.
So let's just say happy birthday Grandma.
Happy birthday Grandma.
What a day we're having today.
We've got the Sognefjord behind us.
We've got the solar out.
Got Kiera doing a bit of homeschooling.
How you getting on Pip?
Good.
Yeah.
You getting the answers right?
Most of them.
We hope so.
And we've got Jack in his natural habitat, the wild.
Jackie what are you doing?
Running around.
Yeah it's brilliant.
And last night and this morning we saw porpoise right in the bay here.
So I've got some drone shots.
I've put them on the editor program but Kiera is the editor
and she's gonna have to give me a masterclass 101 later to try and piece these together.
So we are just getting ready to leave this park up and say goodbye
to that amazing view just behind us now at Sognefjord.
It's been such a nice just couple of days just just taking our time
and unwinding and just taking it all in which is important and sometimes we move on too quickly.
So we spent two nights here which has just been special really special.
So we drove around 30 minutes down the road to visit one of the most famous stave churches in Norway.
The Borgund Stave Church.
Smaller than expected but beautiful nevertheless.
So we're just taking a quick pit stop at Stave Church in Borgund.
You can see the church right behind me.
We've been a bit cheap today and we're just stopping here having a quick look.
You have to buy tickets if you want to go inside the grounds which is about 20 quid for a family ticket.
So we're on a bit of a budget so we can still see it and we're gonna head off now.
After that it was back to explore the small town of Laerdal which sits next to the Laerdal Tunnel.
And let's be honest it's a better day for everyone if the kids can find a play park
to have some fun and burn off some energy.
So yesterday after seeing the church our original plan was to carry on driving up to a glacier.
Which if you want to do a glacier hike you can drive quite close there's also a visitor centre.
But it was just too late in the day for us to do that and actually make the most of actually seeing it.
So instead of moving on we just decided to backtrack just about 20 minutes
to the place we spent the past two nights.
That amazing spot next to the fjord.
So we just woke up this morning and we have woke up with alarms.
We keep sleeping in but it's only now quarter past eight we're almost ready.
We're going to hit the road and head to the glacier place.
It should take around one hour 45 minutes I think.
So it's not too bad and we've got up early so we can make the most of the day.
And it's a final goodbye to Sognefjord.
Thanks for having us.
Right so we just left a beautiful park up on Sognefjord.
However I did get a little bit of a surprise this morning whilst out walking Charlie.
And that is a nude a naked man having a shower under a waterfall.
Not what I wanted to see in the morning put me right after my breakfast.
Other than that wicked park up definitely one to recommend.
We're now heading down the road to see a glacier.
So we've just arrived at the car park for the glacier.
You might be able to see it just behind me there but it is absolutely amazing.
So we're not sure how much of the hike we can do with the kids.
But we're just going to go on up and see how far we can get.
And then if it's too hard then Richard will just carry on.
Because I can see in your eyes your head is full of dreams.
Tears are a proof of failure.
You just gotta let them flow without judge.
Don't put your hands in there that is freezing.
Well what else do you expect to be fair?
Here it comes.
That is absolutely freezing.
So we just walked over what looks like the surface of the moon.
All these rocks.
They're a little bit slippery in places but we're picking a good path.
And this is the first proper view that we've got of the glacier.
Which is absolutely amazing.
Looks like you can actually get really close to it as well.
The guys are doing fantastic.
Aren't we Jack?
So good.
Yeah thumbs up thumbs down.
Thumbs up from everybody.
What about Ted?
Thumbs up.
Yay!
We're here!
Now this is absolutely epic.
And top it all off it's our, mine and Richard's 13th anniversary of being together today.
What a place to spend it.
Well good morning everyone.
We've just had a night stay in this lay-by behind us.
It's just a roadside lay-by on the tourist route.
Free of charge.
We were joined by about four other campers so it wasn't too bad.
It wasn't too bad.
So we've got a 15-minute drive into the small town of Lom this morning.
We're going to do a bit of shopping, food shopping.
And then we've got about a 45-minute drive to another waterfall.
So it should be a good chilled out day.
Time to get this van clean.
So with the van squeaky clean it was time to take it on some more mountain roads.
Pretty sure it will be dirty again by tomorrow.
So we just parked up for the night again.
Another free camping spot which is just what Norway is amazing at.
It's next to some waterfalls.
So we're just gonna go and have a look.
There's a little walk.
Been here before and there's a little bridge so it'll be good fun.
So it turns out that this walk is actually quite steep.
Well at least the first part that we're on right now.
But we have just literally been walking just like pretty much vertically up the hillside.
So hopefully we're almost at the top and hopefully we can then start coming down.
So we've just reached the bit where you have to cross.
The water is quite ferocious.
So we've had a bit of a safety talk with the kids.
And the bit after we get to the other side of the rocks it's quite steep.
And there's quite a big fall sort of on one side.
So we've got to be really careful on this bit and just take our time and be safe really.
So that was probably the most precarious part of the walk.
And probably the most scariest hike we've ever done as a family.
We crossed over.
You might just see it behind me.
That bridge.
The cameras were put away because it was just too dangerous to be trying to film.
And looking after our little ones.
So safety first on that one.
But it's pretty epic.
We've got some amazing views.
So today's top hiking tip comes from Jack.
And that is do not stand on a red ant nest whilst having a wee.
Because they'll crawl up to your nuts.
Thanks for watching guys.
Join us next week as we continue in our quest to head to Nordkapp.
