Anhedonia refers to the inability to experience pleasure in activities and experiences that would be considered to be enjoyable for most people. There’s also a difficulty finding pleasure, finding motivation or feeling an anticipation even towards things they once enjoyed, or events most other people would look forward to.
More than feeling bored with things from time to time, it can be a complex and multifaceted symptom often associated with depression and its presence can vary in intensity and duration from person to person.
This video looks at some of the links between exposure to long term narcissistic abuse and anhedonia.
hello I'm Dar again today's topic comes
from a question that was raised during a
live stream asking is there a link
between anhedonia and narcissistic
neglect and abuse so today I'm going to
outline what anhedonia is how it can be
a symptom of having been
narcissistically abused and how it can
affect people so if you find this topic
interesting please consider subscribing
so anhedonia refers to the inability to
experience pleasure in activities and
experiences that would be considered to
be enjoyable for most people there's
also a difficulty in finding pleasure
motivation or even feeling an
anticipation towards the things they
once enjoyed or events that most other
people would look forward to I would
like to say that this is much more than
just feeling low or feeling bored with
things from time to time it can be a
complex and multifaceted symptom its
presence can vary in intensity and
duration from person to person but it's
often one of several symptoms ass
associated with an underlying condition
such as major depressive disorder and
it's often used to assess the severity
and impact of an individual's depression
it can also be a feature of other mental
health conditions such as schizophrenia
bipolar disorder a traumatic brein
injury or even substance misu it's also
believed it can be hereditary my
research is ongoing to learn more about
the causes of anadon but studies suggest
it could result from a lack of activity
in the part of the brain the produces
dopamine or Feelgood hormone a change in
the activity and that part of the brain
can affect how we perceive rewards from
the things we do like taking part in
Hobbies social activities even just
being around other people if you want to
learn more I will add the research I
looked at in the description of this
video but the two different ways in
which an Adonia can manifest would be
first of all physical this could include
a lack of Interest or pleasure in things
like eating playing sports exercising
sexual activity and so on the second
social anonia involves a lack of
Interest or enjoyment in social
interactions and relationships this can
make it difficult to form or maintain
connections with others now there can be
many causes of anodia but chronic stress
and emotional trauma would be just two
of them and in the context of
narcissistic abuse well this often
involves emotional psychological and
sometimes physical mistreatment by a
parent or partner who has deeply ingra
narcissistic traits or a narcissistic
personality disorder and this type of
abuse can have a profound and
longlasting effect on a person's mental
and emotional well-being narcissistic
abuse is often associated with a higher
risk of developing mental health
conditions such as heightened anxiety
but it can also lead to depression and
post-traumatic stress which can include
symptoms like anhedonia prolonged
exposure to high levels of stress can
also impact the the brain reward system
which as I mentioned earlier could lead
to anonia also ongoing emotional trauma
can impact someone's self-esteem
confidence and their ability to
experience pleasure many cases people
who have experienced narcissistic abuse
and neglect can't find all of their
energy all of their resources go into
just managing day-to-day
tasks as some people who were raised by
narcissistic parents May develop
negative core beliefs about themselves
such is feeling unworthy unlovable or
inadequate they might feel as if they
don't deserve happiness or success in
life some might struggle to form healthy
and secure attachments to others so
might find it difficult to experience
any joy in social interactions they
might find it difficult or just have
little to no interest in making friends
some might believe they have little to
offer anyone now whether that's
affection appreciation or even just
company there can also be the
expectation of Jud judgment or rejection
and this can lead to withdrawing and
social isolation which can impact mood
even further in some cases it can lead
to social anxiety and this can further
contribute to feelings of helplessness
and
hopelessness lastly those who have been
in long-term narcissistic relationships
or grew up in narcissistic families
often experience prolonged Misery the
narcissistic person in their lives may
be ruined almost every special occasion
or moment they had showed displeasure or
disinterest in anything they achieved or
enjoyed and long-term exposure to that
kind of behavior will how could anyone
not be affected
negatively but people who experience
anhedonia can feel like they have an
emptiness inside them they experience
boredom numbness and negativity and they
might not understand why it can also
affect sleep patterns and diet which
again can in turn affect mood energy
levels and stability
I do think it's important to point out
that anhedonia is not the same as apathy
although it is fair to say that both are
often experienced at the same time an
Adonia is a lack of enjoyment or
pleasure whereas apathy is a lack of
energy or motivation but nor is it the
same as nihilism while an Adonia May
contribute to feelings of emptiness or a
lack of purpose it is a psychological
State whereas nihilism is a
philosophical perspective that asserts
meaningless or a lack of value in
existence or at least certain aspects of
it it can also be associated with a
sense of Despair so I think it's
important to note that people may
experience anhedonia without adopting
nihilistic beliefs and vice versa so in
conclusion anhedonia is typically a
symptom associated with other mental or
physical health problems it's an
inability to experience pleasure from
activities usually found enjoyable there
can be an inability to pursue or sustain
a sense of pleasure Joy or satisfaction
over a sustained period of time among
other things it can be caused by chronic
stress and emotional trauma commonly
experienced in long-term narcissistic
abuse however it is important to note
that the effects of narcissistic abuse
can vary from person to person and not
everyone who experiences such abuse will
develop anhedonia or other mental health
issues there is no one treatment for it
however symptoms can be alleviated by
treating the cause or the underlying
condition through Psychotherapy or
medication sometimes a combination of
both and seeking therapy from a mental
health professional can help people
develop coping strategies rebuild
self-esteem and work through the impact
of the abuse on their ability to
experience pleasure and joy in life so
that's a brief outline of an Adonia in
the context of narcissistic abuse as
