A puzzling behaviour commonly observed in interactions with narcissists is their refusal to use your name. This video outlines the complex psychological motivations behind this silent manipulation tactic and how it relates to self-centeredness, control dynamics, creating emotional distance and the devaluation of others.

Hello, I'm Darren Magee and the topic for today's video comes from questions asking
why are some narcissistic people reluctant to call others by their name? Why do they struggle
to even use someone's name whenever they're referring to them? This can be quite a strange,
certainly a disrespectful behaviour if you've seen it or if you've experienced it.
They might do this with a certain person or with certain people. It could be in the workplace,
in the community, it can even be in close personal relationships. I think it's especially
curious as well whenever you see they only do this with some people and not with others.
And not using someone's name is not just a case of maybe not using their preferred name,
nor is it referring to someone by their say their professional title as a form of respect.
It's deliberately not using someone's name in any interaction. But while it might seem strange and
in some cases perhaps insignificant, the reluctance to use a name holds a deeper significance in their
underlying traits and motivations. So in this video I'm going to outline some of the common
motivations why narcissistic people can avoid using people's names and look at the recurring
themes that run throughout. So to understand the why, I think it's important to understand
narcissism. Narcissistic personality is characterised by an excessive sense of
self-importance. They have a huge sense of entitlement. They're preoccupied with fantasies
of unlimited success. There's a need for constant admiration and a lack of empathy for others.
They also tend to view themselves as superior to others seeking validation and recognition
for their perceived exceptional qualities. And their behaviours often compensate for how
incredibly fragile and easily threatened they are by others and reality. So the first reason why a
narcissistic person might not use someone's name is due to an inflated sense of superiority and
self-importance. To use someone's name might seem like an acknowledgement of their individuality or
their achievements, giving them significance which might contradict their own self-concept.
Narcissists thrive on power and control so it can be a way of exerting control and maintaining
dominance over interpersonal interactions. By withholding the use of someone's name they create
a power dynamic that establishes their superiority. They get to maintain their sense of superiority
and delusions of grandeur while minimizing or diminishing the importance of others. It can also
be a way of them showing their displeasure. Now maybe in some cases they were fine using someone's
name until there was some kind of contention or they felt insulted somehow. So the other person's
name is no longer used as a means for them to regain a sense of control, create an emotional
distance and dehumanize their opponent. Beyond that, narcissists tend to employ various strategies
to manipulate and control their interactions. Avoiding the use of names is one such tactic.
It's a way of depersonalizing and impersonalizing interactions. By depersonalizing their conversations
or interactions they get to create an emotional distance. They're less likely to accept other
people's boundaries or feel challenged if they don't acknowledge someone as an individual.
And the absence of personalization contributes to a sense of powerlessness in their target and
enables a narcissist to maintain a tight grip on the relationship dynamics. Another reason can be
narcissists often view individuals as just mere extensions of themselves. Another reason can be
how narcissists often view individuals as just mere extensions of themselves. Extensions that lack
unique identities and have independent value. So using someone's name might humanize and remind
the narcissist that they have their own thoughts, emotions and desires. By disregarding their
individuality, their agency, this helps narcissistic people maintain their perception
of others as just objects. By omitting someone's name they reinforce this objectification reducing
others to just being a faceless entity. It can also be an avoidance tactic. Not referring to
someone by their name keeps a level of emotional detachment and keeps others uncertain and off
balance. It's a way of avoiding emotional accountability and evade deeper connections.
Connections that might challenge their self-centered worldview. Narcissists tend to
struggle with any kind of intimacy other than on a surface level. So emotional connection can be
challenging for them. Using someone's name could signify a level of familiarity and connection that
they might feel uncomfortable with. By shunning the use of names what they're doing is they're
really erecting like a psychological barrier that shields themselves from emotional involvement.
Another reason can be it's a form of preserving their own identity. Remember narcissists have
a very fragile sense of self and often fear losing that sense of self. If they see someone
as some kind of a threat they might reduce them to a nickname or just refer to them generically.
But when it comes to other people the refusal to be referred to by name can have profound
psychological effects especially in close relationships. It contributes to feelings
of insignificance, depersonalization and a diminished self-worth. The absence of personalization
in conversations can reinforce the power imbalance within the relationship leaving the other people
feeling unheard, invisible, disrespected and devalued. Remember another characteristic of
narcissism is being highly disagreeable. Sometimes they come across as obstinate, stubborn. The more
someone confronts them, expects them, demands them, pleads with them to use their name less
likely they are to do it. Rather than seeing it as a way of improving a situation or a relationship
narcissistic person might see this as having to concede something, give the other person some
kind of power or control. A common tactic of narcissistic people is to grind other people down.
They just keep on doing the same things over and over again until their victims just accept it as
normal and that includes being referred to by some other name, some kind of nickname or
just a description. But as with all kind of narcissistic behaviors I think the key to
self-protection is awareness. Recognizing repeated patterns of behavior and understanding the
underlying motivations behind those behaviors can help people navigate, protect themselves
from the manipulation. So to summarize the aversion of narcissists to using other people's
names often stem from their self-centeredness, their need for control, the devaluation of others
emotional detachment and the preservation of their own fragile identity while at the same time
minimizing the individuality and the agency of others. Avoiding personalization allows them to
maintain a sense of superiority and to exert control. That's a brief outline of why narcissistic
people have difficulties referring to other people by their name. As always there's many
things I may have missed please feel free to add them in the comment section below
