Burton Brink: Public Service Requires Judgment, Not Just Headlines | Arcadia City Council Remarks

Good evening, Mayor, members of the City Council, and fellow residents.

My name is Burton Brink. I’ve called Arcadia home since 1967. My mother served on a city commission, and I followed that tradition through nearly 40 years in law enforcement and eight years as an Arcadia City Commissioner.

Those years taught me that public service requires something far more difficult than attracting attention. It requires judgment, discipline, and the ability to get things done.

I’ve watched too many public discussions become consumed by personal disputes, political accusations, and the pursuit of the next headline. Meanwhile, the responsibilities of city government remain. Our neighborhoods still need protection. Taxpayer dollars still demand careful oversight. Residents still expect answers.

In law enforcement, I learned that you establish the facts before reaching conclusions. You ask difficult questions, work with the people responsible, and follow through. The same principles should guide City Hall.

The loudest voice in the room is not necessarily the one offering the best solution. Effective leadership requires working constructively with city staff, public safety agencies, fellow councilmembers, and residents—including those with whom we disagree.

District 2 deserves a serious discussion about the standards of its representation. Residents should examine each candidate’s record, ask what has actually been accomplished, and consider how decisions will affect their community long after Election Day.

I encourage every eligible resident to participate in this election and hold all candidates to those standards.

A headline can win a day’s attention. Only responsible decisions and meaningful results can earn a community’s lasting trust.

I hope I’ve earned your vote.
Thank you.
