We've got a news alert at this hour
as D.C. Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll is speaking.
Further investigation revealed from talking to some
of the staff members that an individual patron entered
the restroom where they located our victim on the ground.
They then alerted the staff here at the library.
At this time, MPD's homicide unit is here
on the scene conducting an investigation into this case.
We would ask that anyone who may have been in the library that has
not been interviewed or talked to by one of our detectives,
they would reach out to MPD.
So we can make sure we interview them.
If anybody has any information regarding this,
we would ask them to also contact MPD at 202-727-9099
or they can text us at 50411.
And with that, I'll take any questions.
Outside or inside?
So we don't have any reason to believe
that the stabbing happened outside.
From the information that we do have at this point
in time, it occurred in the restroom.
Thank you for your time this morning.
So at this point, the motive for the actual attack
is still under investigation.
We can't really say.
Can I say anything? I didn't hear,
but is it a lawyer from the library or someone from outside?
No, so the person has not been identified,
but they are not an employee of the library.
It's an adult male.
What's the weapon we cover?
The weapon is on the scene. It's a knife.
I'm starting to yell.
At this point in time, we don't have any suspect look out.
We are continuing to review video footage
from the library to determine, you know, as
our investigation develops.
If one does develop, we'll be sure to share that with you.
Any specific look out behind this knife?
Is that like a pocket knife or something like that?
Yeah, they're still processing the scene.
It appears to be a kitchen knife,
but again, it's still under investigation.
Sure. So obviously this is very concerning.
There were multiple people that were inside the library
when this occurred, but it didn't cause a disturbance inside
the library that actually drew attention to the incident.
So of course we have the library executive director here as well.
The library police are also here.
You know, they provide security services inside the library.
And of course our officers
also do come by and check on the libraries throughout the district.
So obviously very concerning. We're working quickly
with their detective to try to identify a suspect in this case.
I know it's already stated.
No, at this point, we don't have a motive.
Last question.
How many people were inside?
The exact number of people inside the library I don't have.
There were numerous people throughout the library.
As you can imagine, there's several spaces within there.
But they, you know, it wasn't until a person actually walked in
and discovered the individual that they were alerted to the incident.
Okay, thank you.
Thank you.
All right, you've been listening
to D.C. Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll there as we now
understand that there is a homicide investigation happening there
at the West End Library in
northwest D.C. He was talking
and walking us through some of that crime scene, but it relates
to the bathroom inside that library.
It seems as though the weapon used appears to be a kitchen
knife. Again, no motive, but at this hour,
there is an outstanding suspect for that stabbing
homicide. We are working to get more information.
We'll, of course, pass it along to you right
Here on Fox 5.
