An unfortunate situation.
We've been following the violence on Staten Avenue at a salon.
There's more video that is coming out.
The investigation continues,
and our Jill Croce is there to give us an update.
Good afternoon, Jill.
Good afternoon, Bill. We do have an update today.
Staff Inspector Ernest Ransom of the
Homicide Unit, he gave more details about
the arrests that happened overnight of 33-year-old
Jamal Pistoria. This happened overnight on a SEPTA bus, actually.
Now, he's a suspect that
has been on the run since Monday for shooting
and assaults that happened just behind me at
this East Mount Airy Salon called Abba Blessed Beauty Salon.
This is at the 6300 block.
of Staten Avenue. Now one woman was dead on Monday as a result.
Ophelia Beninari, Hernandez,
Camille and two others were assaulted that day.
Now today, earlier today around 1 a.m. officers from the 22nd
district responded to a radio call of a wanted homicide suspect.
Pistoria was arrested without incident on SEPTA bus 7465.
On the 500 block of South Broad Street,
warrants for his arrest include murder,
attempted murder, and related assault charges.
Now, here's some comment from Ransom today.
I think it's very important to mention this.
Jamal Pastore's arrest was the result of a citizen calling 911.
The 911 call taker, I mean, the citizen provided the 911 call taker
with all the pertinent information we needed.
That included the bus route number.
He tells us that there's no indication that he knew
the women inside that he assaulted and shot that day.
He has two prior arrests outside of this area.
He would not comment further on a location of where those arrests were,
any specific details.
But he did have a known address in this general area, we're told.
Just a quick summary of what happened Monday, Bill.
Pistoria entered the salon, discharged his weapon to the ceiling and...
Forced the salon owner to the back of the room, Ransom says.
That's where he murdered Hernandez Camille
and then assaulted two other women.
After the assault, he then fled on foot.
But as of overnight hours,
he was captured without incident on a SEPTA bus.
And all because of a good Samaritan that called police of their tips.
So you can still see there is a memorial still set up here.
The business is still closed as of today.
But you can just feel the community, the sense of community.
People have come by time
and time again to just take a look at that memorial.
But again, the store is not open today since
the incident that happened Monday, Bill.
So it sounds like very little information.
They're treating this as a robbery.
They don't know if there was a personal connection.
It all seems really random,
like with no explanation as to why to be such a brutal attack.
I was trying to kind of piece it together
at this press conference today.
I was the one who asked him, did he know these people?
Like, was that the connection maybe?
And he said there's no telling that he knew them.
So, yeah, it seems pretty random as of now.
Maybe more information will come out as this story develops
and we'll get some more answers.
But it does seem at this hour pretty random.
Wow. All right, Jill Croce, thank you very much.
We will check in with you a little bit later
as we get additional information.
