Michigan Marine shares journey from rock bottom to hope

Long story short, I lost both my parents while I was working at General Motors, got into drinking and drugs. COVID came and I was left to my own devices. I was close to the point of killing myself. All of us are going through our troubles. We got our low days, our high days, but you just try and find a nice medium. Keep yourself in good spirits and not lose hope. If you want something, Identify your problems and work towards them one thing at a time. You don't have to attack everything all at once. You know, it's a big mountain, but if you take it step by step, we can accomplish it. What was the point that helped you kind of turn, that's helping you turn things around right now? Hope. Trying to get my job back at General Motors. What is it that brought you joy when you worked at General Motors? sense of family. Have you been able to get that family here? Yeah, a couple of good guys. I see you smiling, so it's got to be paying off for you. I know sharing that is very tough. Yeah. And I appreciate you being able to do that, you being strong enough to do that. What helps you get up each and every day here at VOA? The hope of getting my life back together and getting... My job back and working towards getting my parents' house back because some issues with probate court. I ended up losing my parents' house, the house they had for 20 years, and so right now I'm best to stay above water and work towards that goal. Boy, that is heartfelt, isn't it? That was Fox News' Brandon Hudson reporting. Now, leading up to Veterans Day, we are sharing stories of local veterans. For Fox's Make Camo Your Cause initiative, working to end veteran homelessness. You can use the QR code to donate. You can shop for a camo purchase, some pretty cool stuff that you can buy to help. Donate to the cause. You can also spread the word on social media using the hashtag HonorUSVets, and you can watch all the veteran stories on the Fox Local app. There's that QR code right there.
