Welcome back. The Center for Youth
and Families works hard all year round to help young people
and their families facing food insecurities.
Now, through December 6th, they're providing
a little hope in a bag. And CEO Jerry Fisher
is in studio to tell us more about how we can help.
Jerry, thanks for being here today. Thank you for having me.
Let's talk a little bit. So for people
that don't know about this program,
what is it? What's in the bag? And who does it help?
This program is for us to provide for families within the kind of
Central area of Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park,
with providing them with food for Thanksgiving
and hopefully we'll have some bags left over for Christmas.
Okay.
They have a lot of poverty that, you know, food prices have gone up.
Sure.
There is housing insecurity within that area.
And also just there isn't really affordable grocery stores.
So one of these bags would...
Feed a family?
Yes.
Okay.
And are they specifically Thanksgiving bags?
Are they just dinner bags?
How do they work?
Well, we'd like Thanksgiving bags so they have, like,
you know, what they would want to eat on Thanksgiving.
Sure.
And for every bag we get, we then will donate a turkey,
a pound of butter, and a pie.
Okay.
That's perfect. How do people get involved?
I mean, what would help you right now to kind
of fulfill your goal?
The thing that would work best for us if we had people come and
just volunteer and bring bags, you know, to our center.
We'll even come pick them up.
Okay. That would be a great help. We have, we do have two churches.
That are helping us out, still standing, and also Green Grove Baptist.
We're looking at the flyer here just as bags of hope,
but our community, our families, our responsibility,
and that collection period from November 1st through December 5th.
So it says no limit, but I'm saying,
think about somebody that donates that would help you.
Should they think of an entire meal and bring that in a bag,
or should they just bring certain items or anything they can?
What do you like?
What do you think it looks like?
An entire meal, you know, what would be like the sides or,
you know, the food that they like for Thanksgiving
and being able to purchase that and bring that in.
Okay, and drop off, should people call ahead before they do that?
Should they just show up? How does that work?
How does that work?
They can just show up.
They can also, you know, call and they can also go to our website.
CYFamilies.org,
and we have a registration for those that are giving the bags and also
for those that need a bag.
Okay, so if you're a family in need,
you can go to that place and obviously if you
want to donate.
And where are you located?
Because you said people can show up, where can they go?
We're located in the new Center One building, right on the first floor.
Okay, very good. Used to work over there a long time.
All right, it's great seeing you. Thank you so much.
We'll get the website information up.
We'll get that up at fox2detroit.com as well.
Jerry, thanks so much for being here today.
Thank you.
All right, more of Fox 2 News morning as we transition into a little
something called Good Day and keep it going on this Friday.
We'll be back.
