Destructive flooding in Arizona leads
to the death of at least three horses.
Four others are still unaccounted for.
A woman now under arrest in that case,
accused of refusing help to save the animals as flooding
moved into Camp Verde.
Fox 10's Jacob Luthi is live tonight with more.
Jacob.
Yeah, Ellen and Steve, where I'm standing right now,
just a few days ago, would have been covered with water.
Now, I spoke with some neighbors.
They told me that they approached the woman with those horses.
They tell me that they pleaded with her,
asking her to let them help get her horses to safety.
Instead, they tell me they were refused.
We went and spoke to them and we said, hey,
can we please help you get your horses out?
Sunday afternoon, November 1st, heavy rain pounds Camp Verde.
Mary Phelps and her husband were checking on neighbors
when they spotted several horses in their stalls.
They offered to help, but Phelps says the owner refused.
She said they're thoroughbreds.
They've already been through a flood once before.
A Sunday turned to Monday and floodwaters rose.
The Camp Verde Marshal's office says neighbors
made repeated attempts to save the horses.
They showed up with ropes, leads, and even their own trailers,
but pleased to get the animals to higher ground, fell short.
She was reluctant to let anybody give
her any assistance, and so it was too late.
On Thursday, the marshal's office announced
the arrest of Tatiana Bedrin on animal cruelty
charges. Investigators say three horses were found dead,
four more are presumed dead.
We knew this was coming.
There was hours and hours of available time in which she
could have taken these horses off the property and just...
Didn't think it was going to be as bad as it was.
Deputies say four horses were rescued.
Heather Wilson says as conditions worsened,
they finally got the chance to step in.
I just jumped in the water and I had to.
Got the kayaks. At that point, my search and rescue team showed up
and we ended up rescuing the second horse, got it to safety.
The third horse was up to its belly in mud
and we ended up having to dig it out and get it out,
wrap its leg because it was wounded.
From rescues to rebuilding.
Phelps says Camp Verde neighbors have shown up for each other,
but she wishes more could have been done for the horses.
Before you go to bed and lay your head down,
like she decided to stay here after fire departments told her to leave,
she should have opened her gates to allow her horses to leave
or swim away or whatever it may be.
Now, given the severity of those floodwaters,
I'm told that if those remaining horses were swept away,
they could be under feet.
of dirt. Bedrin is again facing animal cruelty charges.
She's expected to have her first
appearance tomorrow.
We called a number that was associated with her, but we did not hear
back. Reporting live in Camp Verde tonight, Jacob Luthi, Fox 10 News.
