Located in Portland, Oregon’s Clinton/Division neighborhood, the Concrete House is a newly completed architectural residence defined by material restraint, permanence, and a strong connection between interior and exterior space.

Designed by Material Architecture & Furniture and built by Capsule, the 3,202-square-foot home is an exploration of concrete, Oregon white oak, blackened steel, natural stone, and expansive floor-to-ceiling glazing.

At the heart of the home, an enclosed courtyard creates a private outdoor retreat, with large Center doors allowing the living spaces to open completely to the landscape. An 18-inch structural concrete wall system gives the house its distinctive architectural character, while custom steelwork, limestone, stainless steel, and carefully integrated details create a warm and highly considered interior.

The property also includes a detached guest house, Port Orford cedar sauna, private courtyard, custom cabinetry, and a series of spaces designed to blur the boundary between architecture and landscape.

Rather than maximizing square footage, the Concrete House focuses on materiality, proportion, atmosphere, and craftsmanship — creating a residence that feels more like a private modernist retreat than a conventional Portland home.

In this house tour, we explore the architecture, interiors, materials, landscaping, and details that make this one of Portland’s most distinctive contemporary homes.
