Diwali, the annual Hindu festival of lights,
it does begin tomorrow, but the celebration is
already underway in Novi.
The city is hosting its Diwali Fest tonight, bringing the community
together to celebrate this big holiday.
Fox News Camilla Murray is live at the festivities with
more. Camilla, I grew up celebrating this in my family,
and it's quite a colorful celebration,
that's for sure.
It's so colorful and so beautiful.
I've told everybody here they look like they are walking art.
I mean, everything is just so gorgeous here.
Speaking of walking art, beautiful and new,
everything you have on, and you are just absolutely stunning.
Talk about this holiday.
What is it, and why is it so important?
So Diwali is known as the Festival of Lights,
and it's celebrated in India and all over the world.
Basically, it just celebrates, you know, light over darkness
and just victory of, you know, ignorance, knowledge over ignorance.
And it just brings families together, kind of similar to Christmas.
So we bring families together, we make sweets and snacks and savories.
Share gifts with everyone just kind of a nice way
to bring family together and celebrate together just
to remind us that even the smallest light is,
you know, giving us direction towards positivity.
So we know that there's always someone and something to look towards
and look forward to. That's awesome. And it's Diwali.
It's Diwali.
Diwali.
So I was pronouncing it wrong because I see the W
and I think it's Diwali, but it's Diwali.
Diwali.
There's a couple different pronunciations.
So it's Diwali, Diwali.
There's a couple of different pronunciations depending
on where in India you're from, but
yes, that's Diwali.
Diwali.
Yeah.
Okay.
So I don't want to sound like a dumb reporter and say it wrong, so.
Say your name again. Hi, I'm Genova Kaiser.
See, I was going to mess it up and call you Geneva.
Okay, you are one of the organizers of this event.
Talk about why is it so important to
have multicultural events like this in Metro Detroit?
Well, here in Novi, the community comes
out just wildly excited to celebrate this holiday with us.
It's a really popular event.
We love having all of the food vendors that we have out here,
so we've got a lot of different
It's kind of a fun way of bringing out the Indian community
and also everybody else who
lives in Novi gets to enjoy those things too.
And you have vendors here, you have, I know, live entertainment.
Talk about that.
Yeah.
So we have a full...
Schedule of performances that are taking place this evening,
dance, I think there's even
a fashion show tonight that's happening,
which, as you can imagine, is exciting.
Here inside the vendor hall, we have...
Jewelry and clothing as well as folks
that are doing henna decorating so you can have
that done or face painting in here just to get really fancy.
Diwali is one of those fancy holidays.
Awesome.
That's what we love.
We love fancy.
So we will also be back at 615.
We're going to see a dance.
I'm really excited about that.
Learn more about the culture and for now we are live in Novi.
I'll send it back to you.
