It's been more than seven years since
a nighttime parade has been held in North Sydney
or anywhere in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality for that matter.
But that will soon change after CBRM Council voted 10-1
in favour to lift the ban.
When I posted on Facebook today there was 35 entries
and I think now there's over 45 entries.
They're allowing us 60, so I think we'll be...
We'll sell out the parade.
Council banned nighttime parades in 2019 over safety concerns
after a child died during a parade in Yarmouth.
It's been debated ever since.
Lloyd McIntosh says the immediate response from the public
on the ban reversal sends a message.
The community wants it for sure.
That's one thing.
And I think the other part of it is that the community
wants to support the nighttime parade.
They want to send a message that, hey, look, we're in favor of this.
I believe that's why so many entries so fast.
Organizers will have to follow a new set of rules.
Routes must be shortened to a maximum of 2.5 kilometers.
Each parade is limited to a maximum of 60 entries,
and each float requires four spotters.
We're going to look at the logistics once we see the rules,
and then we're going to go from there.
We might be asking for public support,
or we might be able to do it in-house.
But either way, we're going to make this parade happen.
Flames Bay Fire Chief John Chan says he's happy
the years-long debate is over and the parades are back on.
It gives you that warm hug when you see all the lights and the music.
I find it's just more festive to have
the nighttime version of the parade.
Flames Bay's parade is scheduled to start on December 5th at 6 p.m.
North Sydney's will be the following Saturday at the same time.
