A 37-year-old man and his 11-year-old
son are recovering after an accident while
trying to clean a handgun.
Fox 2's Scott Wolchek joins us live from Warren and Scott,
What are their injuries and how many more times
do we have to talk about this? It's
got to be careful. You got to take it easy.
Hey, Rup. Yeah, you know what? It is an important
reminder about gun safety.
No matter your skill level, you got to always be. These two are going
to recover, but a very scary situation where
this 37-year-old dad, his 11-year-old son,
Both hurt on Berkshire Avenue last night trying
to clean this gun and we know that
the dad was the one cleaning it.
It was his sister's 380 semi-automatic handgun and while
he was cleaning it, police say the thing went off,
shot the dad in the hand, through the hand
and ended up hitting the 11-year-old boy in the leg.
Now we don't know exactly if he was
Teaching the boy how to clean the gun
or exactly where the boy was in the room
but one shot was fired by accident and it hurt both of them. Both
of them did end up going to the hospital where they did get treated
and they're going to be okay but definitely very scary situation.
Take a listen to what the cops had to say.
Sounds like the injuries could have been worse,
but I would imagine probably a scary situation.
Sure, scary.
I mean, any time a handgun goes off,
it has potential to cause, you know, serious harm
up to death.
So, I think everybody's fortunate
that this didn't turn out a lot worse.
Now, do we know exactly what went wrong with this gun cleaning process?
Not exactly.
Obviously, there was still some sort of round in the chamber,
and somehow during that process,
the trigger ended up getting depressed.
That's how guns work.
So...
When this happens, it's usually one of the symptoms.
Somebody thinks the gun is unloaded and directly
or inadvertently depresses the trigger
and is surprised when the gun goes off.
You know what, Rup, we're usually talking about some state safe storage laws
and things like that, gun locks,
you can get them here at the police department.
Obviously, gun lock may not have helped in this situation,
but it could help in the future just with some
of these news stories we unfortunately have to report.
I'm live tonight in Warren. I'll send it back to you.
Yeah, and Scott, I mean, they have manuals that come with these guns,
obviously, that are instructional.
We should also point out there are video instructions that you can
find online and certainly gun shops that could help if people really
are maybe having questions or they have issues with how to do this.
Yeah, I think so.
And, you know, in this scenario, I can't speculate too much.
We know this was the sister's gun, the man's sister's gun.
So, you know, maybe this guy was a talented guy with firearms
and she was having him clean it.
But in this case, we kind of just don't really know how this happened.
But it just kind of shows it could potentially happen
to anybody if they're not careful.
Well, we're glad that they'll be OK.
This man and his son are Scott Wolchek for us live tonight.
Scott, thank you.
