Founded by Dr. Shantaeher and Heather Nguyen, the organization has grown from a single wagon of toys into a large-scale operation that delivers joy and emotional support to vulnerable children across Texas, funded by community donations and annual events.
One Houston family is on a mission
to make sure children spending Christmas in hospitals and foster homes
have something special to open this holiday season.
And they're counting on generous Houstonians to help make it happen.
With their big annual fundraiser coming up next week,
here's a sneak peek behind the special mission, Toys for Kids.
Just look at all these toys. Every single one destined to brighten
the holidays for a child who could use some extra happiness.
It's all thanks to one Houston family's dream
and the generous people who have helped turn that dream
into something much bigger than they ever expected.
It was hard for us to have children,
so to me it's very disheartening to see kids who
are going through such misfortune.
So we just want to bring a little happiness and
And loved during the Christmas season.
Dr. Shantaeher and Heather Nguyen know
what it's like to pray for a child.
After struggling to start a family of their own,
they were finally able to welcome their healthy son and daughter.
They were so grateful, they wanted to share that blessing.
In 2008, they filled a wagon with toys
and headed to Texas Children's Hospital.
They had no idea how much that one visit would mean to them and others.
How that one idea would flourish into so much more.
And we couldn't stop after that because we saw the joy in the families,
not just the children,
but the parents who were spending that Christmas Eve in the hospitals.
And we knew even though our act was so little.
The impact was so huge.
That wagon became toys for kids and turned into moving trucks of toys,
reaching children's hospitals across Texas as foster homes as well.
They're giving Expanded to Kids Harbor,
a local home for children who've been removed from their families
because of abuse or neglect.
Here, the children make their own wish list,
and they do everything they can to make
those Christmas wishes come true.
I've had kids cry because they were so happy.
I've had kids cry because they were so happy.
Kids get run in and get on the phone and call and tell whoever
they're able to call on the call list what happened that day.
For children who've been through so much,
it's about more than finding a present under the tree.
It's knowing someone cared enough to find exactly what they wish for.
It shows them that, hey, I'm not over here just being forgotten.
Somebody really does care about me.
Somebody takes the time to do this for us.
Making those Christmas wishes come true takes a lot of generous hearts.
The annual Friendsgiving celebration brings
together music stars and Houstonians
who open their hearts and wallets to help make it all possible.
Yeah, that's the gospel of me.
For Sean and Heather, what started as a way
to give thanks for their own children
has become a Christmas tradition they can't imagine living without.
I think it's just an extension of our family now.
When we're able to go to these hospitals
and we get to meet other families and we're getting hugs,
we're getting to share in that
joy, we're getting to see the smiling faces
of kids that are just going through a lot.
That just fills our hearts
and being able to do that because of everybody here in Houston
that contributes to this cause, it's a gift.
That's the gift.
They are the gift and they are doing so much.
