Breaking news, massive flooding leading
to evacuations in North Georgia.
Overnight storms turned roads into rivers and washed out bridges.
In fact, just take a look at this flooded intersection.
This is in downtown McKaysville.
The water nearly covering that street sign.
Yeah, it is.
Mark Teichner is live in hard-hit McKaysville.
Joining us with the latest from there.
Mark, good morning.
Yeah, I'm going to step out.
You can see they're just sending out another rescue boat to go
and get some folks who are stranded inside their home.
These numbers are being shouted out to us of the street numbers
of where they're going to try to rescue people here in McKaysville.
So far, 30 people have already been rescued from their homes,
and those folks have been taken to dry land.
We've been told by the police chief that some
of the water level is reaching above the rooftops
on some of these homes.
You heard Alex mention 16 feet, the water level, and they say that it
just came up kind of out of nowhere.
It started at about 10 o'clock, things were okay, and then
it got really basically out of control during the early morning hours.
And since then, they've been
been on emergency situation.
And as we mentioned, this is just one of the areas that has seen
We've seen flooding up here,
although this is certainly the worst area that has been hit.
Let's show you some other video that we shot.
I shot on the way up here as we were driving up.
First is going to be a bridge that was washed out on Bushy Head Road.
That was up against Bordetown Road.
That Bordetown Road area got hit pretty hard,
and there were some folks who were stranded
in their particular community
because this bridge had washed out.
It didn't hear of any emergencies in that.
In that particular location,
but then when you went on Bordetown Road, there was an
actual mudslide that was blocking some of the road
and it got so bad that they had to
actually close off the road.
And I was trying to get my way up here and as I was,
I took Lucius Road and I ended up
coming upon a flooded area where there's folks
who are stranded inside their home.
The road was completely impassable as you can imagine
and I had to drive really almost
all the way back.
Basically, to L.A.J. to get myself back up here,
finally to McKaysville, and it is a mess up here.
Obviously, this is something where they are trying
to do what they can to try to save these folks.
We did talk with the man who was rescued,
as well as the police chief, about this entire operation.
I got dressed and went outside. The water was this deep,
and I couldn't get my truck out, so I had to leave my truck.
Then the sheriff's deputies knocked on the front door
and said, you need to evacuate now.
And he said, you probably have to wade through water,
but by the time my wife got dressed
and I got the animals, they had to send a boat for us.
We're actively trying to water rescue people,
but we still got several people trapped in
homes that we're trying to get to,
and the water keeps rising, so just bear with us as
much as you can, and please say a prayer for them and their families.
How many...
Well, the good news is Bella,
as well as Kiki the cat, Bella the dog, got out okay.
We can't tell you, the chief says the water
is so high that he had one of his cruisers
that was literally just floating down
the street here in downtown McCaysville.
This is something that these folks are going
to be dealing with for quite some time.
We, of course, are going to stay on top of it,
and we'll have another report for you coming up.
At 6:30, but for now, that's the latest from here at the North Georgia,
North Carolina state line in McCaysville.
I'm Mark Teichner for Good Day Atlanta. Back to you guys.
Yeah, and certainly we've seen rescue crews
from surrounding counties helping out as well.
An all hands on deck situation up in that area.
Mark, thank you for that. And last hour,
we watched a swift boat rescue.
