It was a terrifying experience here
on the west side of Bridgeport today
as one mom had to make a split second life
or death decision while she and her baby were on
the second floor of this multi-family house here
on Hanover Street around 8 30 in the morning.
As the fire spread quickly,
firefighters working atop ladders and inside the building
could be seen working just as fast to battle the blaze.
Our company's being an aggressive attack.
It left a total of six families displaced.
I opened my window to say, you know,
what's going on, you know, to see who at my door.
And all they kept saying was fire, fire.
So all I did was just grab my baby and ran out the house.
I just saw flames and black smoke exploding out of the roof.
I've never seen anything like it,
and that was really, really, really scary.
It was at this same spot in 2015
when an earlier fire destroyed three of the multifamily homes here.
When houses are this close together,
you can see how it melted the siding.
Mayor Joe Gannon touring the aftermath of this fire.
We know our firefighters were here quickly.
They responded. They got back up.
Along with Jillian Baldwin, head of the Bridgeport Housing Authority.
which had just completed renovations on the building that was gutted.
We're prepared to work alongside the families and our community leaders
to make sure that we lessen the impact as much as possible.
Jillian Baldwin says she's working
to get all six families temporary housing
well beyond the one night in a hotel
that the Red Cross is usually able to provide.
Meantime, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
