This tutorial walks you through the basics of using Shapr3D to create functional items, specifically focusing on designing feet for a welding setup. It is a great starting point for anyone looking to build their own hardware without struggling through complex software interfaces.
We demonstrate how the intuitive CAD software tools make it simple to turn an idea into a 3D model quickly. Whether you are a beginner or just looking for a faster 3D modeling workflow, this guide shows you how to get results with Shapr3D for your fabrication projects.
The speaker demonstrates how Shapr3D accelerates the CAD design process using an iPad and Apple Pencil. By designing and 3D printing protective feet for a welding jig table, the video highlights the software's intuitive interface, rapid prototyping capabilities, and the seamless transition from a digital sketch to a physical, functional part.
In this video I'm going to show you
a little quick tutorial on the new CAD software I'm using,
Shapr3D. While this is a really simple design to start,
it was a good like learning lesson to
kind of navigate software.
I made these little feet for my welding setup that you're going to see.
Turned out great, software is awesome.
Stay tuned, check it out. This is super exciting how fast I'm
going to be able to create things from scratch.
Let's go. I'm going to show you my new favorite tool.
It's a CAD program called Shapr3D.
And let me start from the homepage here.
And they have a free version.
I'm gonna put some links below and you can try it out too.
So like when it comes to 3D printing,
of course I didn't want to jump into an expensive product.
I'm not picking on Fusion, but a lot of people use.
And it's a committed subscription price, right?
I mean, it's pretty committed.
And there's a lot of products out there
of varying levels of what you can do and so on.
But I've been watching the Shapr3D.
Let me go ahead and open this one up.
This was the original one.
And what I love about this product is that on the iPad here,
I mean, I could just sit and flip this around, in and out, zoom in.
I have so much functionality here.
It's mind-blowing with my fingers.
Versus using like a mouse or a keypad on my desktop with a FreeCAD.
And no shame on FreeCAD. I used it for, you know, a long time.
I think it was a great starter one,
but I really wish I would have just started
with something like this. I'd have a million
hours of my life back. I mean, this thing is unbelievable.
I'm using the pencil here. You
could choose to use a keypad or a mouse if that's what you prefer
and you don't have a pencil, but
With the pencil and me just touching things,
it's been definitely the way to go for me.
I wanted to show you this little simple file, how quick I can make it.
And if you've ever, you know, done this or just started getting
into it, you'll see what I mean by quick, right?
It's really super fast.
What this is is a little foot protector for these feet
on this little Harbor Freight welding jig table.
You'll see it when I'm done here.
I'll put it all together and put some links in there.
But I just want to put some pads under these metal feet
because I'm doing something kind of...
Off nominal right and making it custom that's what we do.
I thought you know I'll just 3D print
these see what I think just as an experiment first.
I might put some rubber or whatnot but
anyway this is where you start right.
Let me show you how I'm going to do that and how fast it is.
So I'm just going to go up here to a new file.
Okay I'm going to make a sketch. I'll grab a
circle just start pulling from the outside.
Now I know all my measurements for my chicken scratch
So what I could do is just start punching those in.
Boom, that fast.
The order that you do things really matters too.
So I've learned that kind of the hard way.
So usually what I do is I make my shape
and then I start to extrude it.
Now notice, that's what was so fricking rad.
Let me do that again.
I didn't have to like go, you know, click on the sketch,
then go over here and find the tool
with whether going in the search bar
if I don't know where it is.
If I type that in here,
extrude, one-sided, oops, okay.
Doing the same thing without me having to look for it, right?
So I'm going to hit cancel.
I'm going to, oops, I want to go back to my 50 millimeter.
And what you're going to notice here is I'm just going to tap in here,
and it starts to, like, decide, hey,
do I want to extend this, you know,
To a different diameter, do I want to extrude it up and down?
Well, that's what I want to do.
I want to extrude it and go below the plane, above the plane.
Well, I know that I want nine millimeter.
We'll get into that in a second, but there I am.
So now I can check things.
I could click out of that.
Just take a look at this.
Another thing you have, these display modes.
So I'm on shaded here.
You can go to x-ray.
You'll start to see everything.
I'll come back to that.
That'd be better just to come back.
Let's stick on shaded for now.
Okay, so I know that I want to have another circle,
and I want to extrude that as well,
right? So I've got a couple different ways I can go about this.
My second circle, I want the top
to come down. I want to be extruded that way, right?
So what I'm going to do is I'm just simply
going to start a, I'm going to exit this sketch, okay?
I'm going to start a new sketch. This is
This is the fastest way I've found to do that.
I'm going to put my circle here.
I'm going to go to...
Forty-two.
Because that's what I want.
Okay, well, now that I did that second sketch,
again, it makes it so easy.
I can just drag down, go minus four,
because that's what I want.
I want a five millimeter base, okay?
Let me actually exit out of this, deselect here.
I'm gonna switch my view.
This is where it gets nice to x-ray.
And you're gonna see here, look at that, see?
So now my bottom,
is flat on the plane for printing,
and then I've got this little pocket in here, okay?
Another way I could look at this
is I can go to visualized, okay?
I start to really see,
it even shows these like drop shadows
of what it would really look like.
Pretty stinking cool.
And you can edit from here too.
I just, I don't like to for whatever reason.
I don't know why,
but I'm going to go back to the shaded
because it seems to be easiest.
Let me deselect everything.
Now I'm going to grab this outside edge.
Oh, look at that.
It's already just guessing,
do I want to fillet or chamfer?
But watch this.
So yeah, I could pick it this way, okay?
Watch what happens if I just grab this.
I can go in or out to see which one I like.
I like going backwards to that R2.
Actually, two is right where I want it.
Stopped right there.
I can grab this bottom one, same thing.
I'm just going to go R1 on that one.
I've got this nice little shape here.
I can go back to my visualized.
There it is.
Look at that.
How fast was that, right?
So I'm going to go ahead
and title this,
and I'm going to call this,
let's see, okay,
Weld Feet Covers.
Then what I'm going to do is I'm going to go ahead
and sync this, because I want to
into, I want to sync this project.
Why I want to do that is if I go back to home here,
now you can see here I had some different
projects in here.
i can grab that anytime it's synced if i'm working
from a different device or something
has this on there i'll have it as well
because it's synced but i'm going to go here and i'm
going to go to export you got some different
choices here obviously depend what you're doing
if you already have a preset it's freaking awesome go right
to that splicer that's pretty cool i
don't see any creality stuff on here
which is what i have now the two common ones are a step
or a 3mf file so 3mf file is where i want
to go now here's the thing that you get with like the
I don't know what levels the subscriptions are,
but like I said I'll put a link below.
When you have the free version,
it doesn't print in like super high resolution.
Okay, so that's just something to keep in mind as you're experimenting.
I made a fair amount of things with it,
I just didn't need that, but I knew I was going to start
to get into stuff where I'm like, ah, no,
I really want to dial that in, right?
So check and see what the latest is.
At the time of this video, that's the way
I understood it might be different.
It defaulted to high, include all the bodies.
Okay, let's see, and I go to export.
Let's see, I'm gonna go ahead and put this on my iPad.
I've got a 3D print file folder.
I'm gonna save it there.
Okay, that's it, let's see.
And there it is, okay.
Now I've got to set up a...
A couple of things here in my workbench on Creality.
It looks like since I used this last, they have some different changes.
But I'm going to go ahead and do those next.
Come back in here, print this file, see what it looked like.
And then, yeah, that's really my introduction to Shaper 3D.
I cannot wait to just make a ton
of stuff really fast and easy like that.
So let's print these.
Let's get them on the custom project I'm doing
and see how it turned out.
All right. Let's see how these first dimensions went.
Here's the problem. None of these are the
same. So keep that in mind.
And what I, my plan was, or my design was to make the pad a little
small so that I could take these either in the lathe there.
I might even just put them in a
drill and spin it and hold a piece of sandpaper on there.
Just depends how much it's going to
need. Like one of these has even got a big dent in it right there,
but let's, this one looks to
to be pre-concentric, okay, and what I'm hoping for.
is that it's a little snug fit and I I think it's
a little snugger than I want. Yeah so that's why
you do a test one because I think I'm going
to increase that uh that 42 I'll go like well I don't
know maybe not you might like it.
But my plan is just put a bunch of hot glue in here and get this
on but it would be nice if there was some drag going across here
but I printed enough stuff now
and I know that if you start forcing it
or trying to press it you better be
Pretty dang close because there's not much strength
in a thin wall like this that's only
what eight millimeter thick and has 15% infill.
It's going to snap and then the other thing I'll
do is when I go to make my final print I'm going to make it 100% infill
and since this is PLA it's
It's not flexible.
If anybody has any thoughts or comments,
please feel free to chime in on the bottom if you've
done something like this.
The main reason for this is just to be like an anti-scratch. It's
not meant to be like banged around or whatnot.
It's just when I slide the little welding table
around, it'll help not totally tear the surface up.
So anyway, I'm going to print all four of
them. Yeah, cool. All right. Way to go, Shaper3D.
What a neat product here. You can take a look
Here, actually, let's...
let's try and see if i can get
this to break off one-handed. here
we go. pretty stinking cool isn't
it? i could dang near size these up uh exactly. i i love i
was saying this last night when i was
making the video and i couldn't show it
because i was working from the actual video recording of the
of the iPad, but...
This ability to sit and do this is by far just a game changer for me
because on FreeCAD,
it's like every time I'd click the wrong mouse button or whatnot,
it would like snap up and do
something crazy. So this allows me to really just get in there
and then just kind of look at from
this view. This is where you can start to look at your different layers
and kind of a, let's see,
I think I'm on x-ray is what the view is.
No, I'm on shaded. Okay, let's try x-ray.
So, x-ray, level two.
Awesome, awesome, awesome.
This is really neat.
You know, since I'm in here, I should look at some of the other stuff.
When you start to get multiple bodies
and you start to have items you want to join together,
this is where, to me,
my understanding is this is going to be a lot easier to do.
Because when you start to take
and want to merge stuff together, I found it to be...
Quite cumbersome on like particular orders
and different things you needed to do
with some of the other CAD programs.
So like in this one here, I only have one body on here.
So let's go to Exit Sketch and I go to,
I think I'd have to make another one to show my point here.
Let's see if I can find it.
Tools.
Let's see.
Split body.
I think it's union.
Selecting intersecting bodies to unite. So this is so cool.
So I make my two things right. And I can just put them together.
And this is the other thing. They make all these two tutorials.
So you could see here that I pulled up a tool
and it's literally giving me a
tutorial to tell me what to do. Right? I mean, I can, oh man,
it's just fricking awesome. Awesome. Awesome design here too.
I'll be able to learn things faster.
I totally forgot about that till right now.
Well, if you can't tell, I'm pretty dang excited about
this product here and what I'm going to be able to do.
But if you're familiar with a lot of these CAD programs, you can start
to see these are all the things I saw everywhere else from, you know,
your different lines on your sketching, your mirror, your pattern.
Just adding text, you know,
that's something where like maybe I want to go in here and
it's a particular thing that's visual like a coaster or something.
I want to add some text
in there. I can do that. Oh man.
All right, I'm kind of just rambling and being all giddy because
this is going to be a game changer to speed up
my workflow, but let me go ahead and keep
working on this project and get it done.
So I'm just dressing these up a little bit
here on the lathe. I really like this tight fit.
I've not had to glue one yet.
Working pretty well. All right, pretty good fit here.
I like hearing that bottom out nice.
A little anti-seize.
All right, let me get
this in. I'll flip this up
and kind of talk
about what I'm going to do next. Well, it is coming together.
All right, friends, I'm going to call this video a wrap
because this video was more intended for
the focus of Shaper 3D. But if you want
to watch what I did with the welding table and how I'm
doing my organization, my tools,
I think it's going to be a pretty neat idea, especially why
I cut the legs off the welding jig table there.
Head on to the next video. I'll put links below.
If you are looking to dive into this world,
Shaper 3D is a fantastic product to make it fast.
If you're looking to try out something new,
there's a free software version you can try yourself.
If you just want to dive in and purchase it,
I'll have links to that as well.
But all right, my friends, as always, like,
share, and subscribe, and keep wrenching.
