Republican John Deaton became emotional as he addressed supporters after losing the Massachusetts U.S. Senate race to Democratic Sen. Ed Markey. Watch Deaton’s remarks to supporters following the election results.
Let's go to Boston 25's Daniel Coates.
Daniel, you are at the John Deaton headquarters
and the watch party there happening tonight
out in Weymouth.
Yeah, and it wasn't much of a party.
I mean, it was supposed to start at 8 o'clock,
and at 8:05, I would say,
is when we got that projection that
longtime Democratic Senator Ed Markey
would win re-election over candidate John Deaton.
Although it was packed in here about an hour or two ago,
I was able to speak with Deaton as he got off his campaign bus.
He had tears in his eyes.
He was saying that he wanted to give Massachusetts...
Another opportunity, and that's what he told this crowd of,
I would say, about 100 people
crammed into the Union Brewhouse in Weymouth.
Now, Deaton was zigzagging all across the state today.
He knew that it would be a big challenge going up against Markey today.
And over the last couple of months,
this is his second time in a Senate race
before falling to Senator Elizabeth Warren in 2024.
He told me outside of his campaign party that...
He likely won't run again, but he said anything can happen.
And at this time, Markey has about 75 percent of the vote,
Only a fraction of the votes have
been counted right now as of 10 o'clock tonight.
His mission, Deaton told me, was and the crowd tonight
was to break down party walls that he says divide us.
I congratulate Senator Markey and I hope that Senator Markey,
Thank you.
Things about healthcare, things about housing, things about energy,
things about vocational training, things about how to handle AI,
and all the challenges, and not be so focused on partisan politics.
He told me that his campaign goes well beyond just this race.
He said that he had a really tough upbringing.
He's already overcome so much.
This is his second campaign.
He said that this proves that the American dream is possible
because he's living it out.
He also told us that the bigger picture still lives with him
and still should live with his constituents
and that they should help each other,
help each other's neighbors, regardless of political party.
He says that's what he hopes.
Senator Ed Markey does with another re-election in his pocket now.
