ABC News' Rachel Scott breaks down a big night of firsts in the 2026 midterm elections.
With voters making history all around
the country overnight, let's bring in senior
political correspondent Rachel Scott
with the first big things of the night.
A night of firsts, Rachel.
Historic night of firsts for both parties.
And I want to start here with governors
because for the first time in U.S. history, next year
there will be five black governors all serving at the same time.
So in Florida, Republican Byron Donalds elected
as that state's first black governor.
Keisha Lance Bottoms winning there as governor in the.
The state of Georgia, she is the first woman,
black woman to be elected governor in the
United States.
David Crowley there in Wisconsin and over in Nevada, Aaron Ford.
This trend starts to continue.
I mean, take a look at this, Texas,
Texas electing its first Latina governor.
And then there, Amy Acton becoming
the first woman elected governor of Ohio.
Deb Haaland becoming the first female indigenous governor.
And then Javier Becerra out in California,
the first elected Latino governor.
Over to the Senate now, two historic folks.
First to note, Chris Pappas,
the first openly gay man elected to the U.S. Senate, and then
Abdul Al-Sayed becoming the first Muslim senator in U.S. history,
an extraordinary night of
firsts for all of these candidates from both parties,
something to celebrate on both sides
of the screen.
So much history.
Congratulations to them all.
All right.
Thank you, Rachel.
